80# Terrova with Lithium Batteries – Experience?

I am planning on installing a Terrova, leaning towards 80# thrust, on my 16.5′ tiller.

Space and Weight are valuable to me, and running a 24V system with two lead-acids in the front would likely compromise a few trips for me.

Anyone have experience or recommendations for running two Lithium 12V 60ah on a Terrova? I want to say I read that you have to exceed 56ah in order to get 100% thrust out of the Terrova.

I am not opposed to 55# Thrust with a single large amp-hour 12V, but hesitant to do long days in high current with that set-up.

    Thanks for any advice!

I can’t answer your question, but I had a 55 lb Terrova on a similarly sized boat, and while it worked well for me, it struggled with heavy current. So, if you fish in current a lot, I would go up in size.

I got a single 24v 56Ah for my jon boat tiller 2 years ago for the same reasons and have zero complaints- well worth the cost. It’s on an 80 ulterra and have run spot lock all day on the river and have still not used the battery up in a single day. It’s really nice not having to charge as often. I also bought a $100 aluminum locking battery box.

I think that was saying the 80lb draws 56 amps at max thrust, that’s different than the capacity of the battery in amp hours.

I’m running 2 12v 50ah Amped Outdoors on my 80# Terrova on my 17′ boot. Run all day on lakes no problems. Not sure why the ah rating of a battery would affect max thrust. I used to have a 55# on the same boat and this set up has way more power so I think I’m getting max thrust when needed.

Great to know. Do you happen to know the brand of your alum. lock box?

That makes way more sense, thanks.

Great input. For instance, Dakota Lithium sells the 24V 54ah. Is that essentially two 12Vs packaged as one? Still looks like I would need the wiring kit for the 12V’s?

Looks like I just need to pull the trigger. Thanks guys.

Post back once you get some run on it. I’m going to pimp my old 16′ lund soon, and have been thinking of doing the same with a new (to me) TM and Lithium batteries.

I just picked up a 80lb terrova and ordered a 24v 100ah lithium last night. I should be able to give it a good work out in the next few weeks on the river.

Yeah my 24v 54ah is from Dakota Lithium. But I’m sorry to report my memory wanted to remember the box was only $100 but it’s quite a bit more. Rvlockbox.Com

Isn’t there an issue with colder temperatures and marine lithium batteries? I just did a quick search and some say they are not to be charged in temperatures below freezing.

I think the OP is specifically referring to a Dakota brand and those are fine in cold temps. But other brands look like they aren’t.

In my experience cold (or hot) only matters for charging. I keep my snowblower/mower batteries in our unheated garage, and the only issue is when they are too hot/cold to recharge.

Mine have an operating temp range of -4 to 140 degrees. Doubt I’d be out in the boat below or above either end of the spectrum.

Going on season 4 with a 24/75AH single LifePo4 battery, used with an Ulterra and Terrova #80lb.That was the largest 24 single that was available in a 31 series case, now there is a 24/100AH.Where will it end?I have VERY little room for batteries,so I went with a 12V 125AH Ionic,PP Charge and the 24V single. Both batteries, charger and custom box weigh in at about 70lbs,that is lighter than the Odyssey 31 AGM,that sucker weighs around 77lbs.
Only time I ran the 24 down to 28% was when I was out in the mid 20s,and the PP charge stopped charging like it was supposed to do.Ran 4 or so hours on constant spot lock with just battery. It’s a set-up that works great, far better than running a 12V motor on river currents, where I would run batteries flat.
