Looking at an 8 or 9.9 merc 4 stroke kicker.

Is there much of a power difference?

Any pros or cons that are significantly different?

It depends on how slow you want to troll and what type and size boat? I had a 9.9 on my 17.6′ aluminum boat and for the speed that I troll .8 to 1.2 mainly it was more than enough. My cousin has a 6 hp Johnson I think is the brand it it would of been perfect for my boat.

If you have a main motor failure the 9.9 has more guts to get you back in. I think an 8 hp would not be that big a difference.

    Its for a Ranger 619VS

I already have a 9.9 manual tilt on it but I have an offer for an 8 with power tilt/trim with very few hours on it for an almost straight up trade

My other cousin runs a ranger 620 I think, he has a 9.9 and it has more than he needs for trolling, I would think an 8 would be fine on that boat.

I was looking for a manual 8 when I started searching for a used unit and fell into a full power 9. Now, seeing how nice power tilt and trim are, I would take the 8 set up that way over a non power 9 every day. Either motor has all the power and torque…. the convenience, and mounting improvement of a power unit are far better.

This is on the Yamaha T8 and T9…. not sure both of your items are trolling motors, or just small regularly geared items

I also thing it would depend on if you are trolling for Muskies, Great Lakes trolling, versus smaller inland lakes trolling. Can speak to the Mercs as I only have experience with he Yami’s.
