Looking at these 2 calibers for a new deer rifle. Probably can’t go wrong with either but looking for opinions. Shots will range from 100-300 yards, open prairie

I’ve got a 7mm-08 bolt action Remington model 700. I’ve had it for 17 years now and I can’t even remember how many deer have fallen during that span (maybe 20 or so). I have never missed a deer that I have shot at within 325 yards. It has tack driving accuracy and minimal recoil. I use a ballistic tip round for ammo and I have a Nikon Buckmaster scope mounted on it.

The one downside is that it can sometimes be difficult to find ammo for this caliber, and it is more expensive too.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for the review, it’s helpful. What grain bullets are you using?

If I had to make the decision I’d be all over the 7mm-08.

It’s a good decision to have to make for sure. I’m leaning 7mm-08. As for rifle I’m leaning towards the tikka t3 light.

I have two 7-08’s and really like the cartridge for deer and antelope hunting.

The 6.5 Creed is a good round as well, but I never jumped on the bandwagon like a lot of people.

At 140 grains, the 6.5 has an S.D. figure of 0.287, and the 7mm an S.D. of 0.248, and though the 7mm-08 offers a velocity advantage of 115 fps or so, the penetration advantage would still go to the 6.5 Creedmoor. So i hunt out west and shots can be far 300 plus. My choice would be neither , it would be 6.5 PRC .
