Have the same issue and after fighting it and researching it for a while I am replacing it with a Helix. My 798ci si did exactly the same thing starting two seasons ago and it got worse no matter what I did. Checked all connections, power, brackets, SW was up to date and everything under the sun checked based on similar problems by others as stated online on many boards. My biggest rub on the 798 is after I purchased it with the new boat they discontinued the models. I have a 788 on the bow and switched brackets and it still did not work. My 788 and 798 are networked and I was running the 788 GPS to my 798 to get by.
So I am sorry to hear you are having the same problems but after fighting not having GPS on my console unit I am done.
Good luck but if you need GPS you could try and external GPS puck but for the money you would spend I would put it toward a new depthfinder…that is what I am doing. Plus you can get a bigger screen for sideimaging.
