do you use a reel with this or is it like a roach pole (English type of pole fishing)?
Dude. Are you going to sit in your boat a few feet from the hole!?
I had to build myself a 48″ rod after last year, I suppose I need a 72″ now…

Nope, you now need a 73 incher.
I saw a couple guys last year out on the ice and they were having a blast with these !!!
There is a reel at the butt of the rod and the line goes thru the inside of the blank…
What the heck, who is gonna be able to see the spring bobber twitch at 6 feet away?
If this trend catches on I could just use my summer gill poles!
Well Dave….you finally have a fishing rod longer than you are tall. Anything larger than a 6″ sunfish and you’ll tip over. lol
I had a couple Thorne Bros springs that I retro fit to a 6 foot ul spinning rod by wrapping some electricians tape around the spring until it fit snug in the tip top. Worked like a million bucks and I still use this set up on docks occasionally when the bite goes real light.
Been using long rods like that (fiberglass, same reel setup, but 5 ft max) for awhile now and I LOVE fishing gills in shallow (<10 ft) weeds with them. I use light plastics with a light, responsive tail, set my hand right on my hip and just barely make the spring bobber quiver.
Let us know how you like it!
Here’s what I have hanging on the end of a couple rods I use for late season dock fishing occasionally. The dock bite has gone south so I am getting the springs back in their tubes for winter storage and will re-install them next spring when the dock clear of ice.
IF I should happen out on some ice this winter looking for crappies I can rig one of these rods back up in a blink. These springs are a snap to install done up as I have the one here and with the latex tubing I can adjust the spring in or out for lighter/heavier baits. If a rod tip is larger than the latex tubing I can just add a wrap or two of electricians tape to snug it up without losing the adjustability.
Hands down, these springs are absolutely the best spring bobber I have used and I think over the years I have tried just about all of them.
The jig shown here is a 1/32 with a 1.5″ paddletail.
Just out of curiosity, what is the advantage of having a a 4ft or longer ice rod? My preference has always been 32″ or under but maybe that because of how I fish (either sitting on a bucket or in the flip-over)
Thinner ice or ice without snow cover lets a ton of shadow down into the water. These long rods allow a guy to stay well away from the holes so shadows are less likely to spook a potential hit.
I have been using the inline rods for… shoot.. A Long Time !! hahaha
I like them for hole hopping… Several years back James and I did a crappie shoot on the backwaters of the Mississippi River.. My home waters…
You can’t beat it for waters under 10 feet .. just lift and lower the tip of the rod to work the full water column..
There are many fishing Kansas ice with regular open water poles. These are usually people without sonar. They just dip n rip!
