6.5 PRC Build

The custom rifle bug bit me on a work trip down to Florida where we were hired to film and photograph a PRS event. I went down the rabbit hole of researching all the different barrels, custom actions, triggers, stocks and chassis etc. I wanted a gun that could do most everything. Long range target shooting to killing a mule deer or elk. I settled on the 6.5 PRC for the caliber.

I just received my barreled action today and can’t wait to bolt it in my chassis! I had TS Customs out of SD build it. I went with an Impact Action, Benchmark carbon fiber barrel, and a Hawkins self timing muzzle brake. I’ll post more photos tomorrow along with the details to the rest of it.

Sweet! I’ve been doing a little research along these lines as well, and it’s a little overwhelming, especially for a desk jockey without any build experience.

I had a chance to inspect some of the goodies today when Pat had the barreled action in the office. That is one sweet build. I’m hoping Pat will let me accompany him to the range to put some lead downrange!

    Congrats on the build Pat.

Just when the new and improved 6.8 western comes out… Jk

Looks beautiful. Can’t wait to hear about it’s first hunt.

TS does awesome work. I’ve been messaging back and forth about a build for the past few weeks. Just need to hit some stock targets to free up the cash now.

Nice looking rig so far. Wasn’t overly familiar with the 6.5 PRC, but now I see what you were saying about long range. Got some knock down power from 500+ yards! I do have a few questions.

Curious on your thought process behind adding the muzzle brake? Appears to have a decent amount of recoil to it but not much more than a .270. Or add it for another reason?

Any ideas on which scope you’re going to throw on it yet?

I wanted the rifle to be as easy to shoot as possible. Adding a quality muzzle brake helps a lot with recoil. I actually already shot it. Very low recoil. It does bark pretty good, but thats ok with me.

I mounted a Bushnell LRTS 4.5-18 X 44mm on it. It was really hard for me to find a FFP scope that weighs less than 30 oz. That Bushnell achieves that and is very highly regarded. Cameraland has them on a closeout for $750 down from $1999 msrp.

I’ll take some better pictures of sometime, but here it is:

Masterpiece Arms Ultra lite Chassis with EVG grip, Spigot mount for bipod, and rear bag rider

    Bushnell LRTS 4.5-18
    Hawkins Ultra Light Tactical rings
    Triggertech Diamond trigger
    Warne Skyline bipod

That rifle turned out fantastic! Excited to hear how it shoots. What was the final weight?

I should weigh it without a few of the extras like the spigot mount, bipod, and bag rider, but the way it sits in the picture it weighs 11.8 pounds. So stripped down would be around 10 im guessing. 8 pounds without scope and rings.

    Beautiful gun…
I have a 6.5 prc also and I have been very happy with the way mine shoots as well. It has become my primary hunting gun that I want to have with me.

That is a sweet looking setup! Are you handloading?

Yeah, i’m somewhat limited on powders, but Retumbo seems to be shooting well through it, it’s just a little bit slower.
