Just bought a G3-comes with a 40 but could get a 50-hate to even ask on this site everyone says: more! The 40 of course is lighter and cheaper-the 50 is quieter, stronger, faster-think it even has an extra cylinder. Either way happy to be in the Yami club. Never thought I would buy something so nice.

You kind of guess that. I have a 40 hp on a 16.5 v-bottom. I always wish that I could of had a 50 on my boat. I fish the Mississippi river. Going down river it would run ok but going up river it is a bit slower. Good luck on your boat and what you decide to do!!

Smaller and lighter has some merit. But, if you might do some camping, or fish 3 large people often, I’d pay for 25% more power. Underpowered in wind and current sucks.

It goes back some years, but when I got my 50 the 50 had EFI and the 40 was carbureted. No brainer from that standpoint.

Which boat specifically? 40 may be just fine, need more info.

So is the extra cylinder in the 50 a big deal?

With a 40 you can expect to be wide open more. The 50 is going to last much longer at 3/4 throttle while maintaining the same performance. With the choice, I would max out the hp on any boat.

Get the 50 or you will regret it. I have a 1625 lund rated for a 60 and it came with a 40 yami ( used package ) loved it for the first year , but know every time I look at it knowing it could have a bigger motor drives me nuts. Just my two and half cents

V167T? Sweet boat man. Looking at it online.

    Dry hull weight 765#

40 will work imo. It’s not gonna be flying across the lake when fully loaded with 2 guys but it’ll do the job.

How do those yammmies troll down? I’m unfamiliar, vts? 40 vs 50 in that regards any noticable difference anyone in the know?

I’d opt out for better backtrolling and regular trolling aspects for big motor. That’s not a big water boat that’s gonna be out in 4’s all the time or need to fly in for a weigh in. But maybe you’re a bass guy who likes speed, and don’t troll forward or backward all that much.

If you’re transom is rated up to a 50HP
    Do it!
You won’t regret it, plus you’ll get a better return on your investment in case you ever decide to trade or sell.

For sure max the HP if you can. I had a 16′ Crestliner w/a 25 Evinrude. Just me in the boat, it scooted along quite sprite and fast. When adding 2 passengers, the thing sometimes couldn’t even get up on plane. sad

Nice boat. I’ve never been a big fan of the G3s dual consoles, but this is a solid tiller. I also like the fact that you can get it unpainted. Nothing beats a back to basics tiller that it’s to launch, follow contours, and has a dependable Yamaha on the back. I think you’d be fine with the 40 stroke, but if you can swing it, just get the 50 so you’ll never wonder what if.

Do both come with power trim/tilt?

Sometimes a third cyl. can make an engine run a bit smoother, but then again that adds to the potential problems…
Do either have a variable speed trolling button that increase RPM by 50 or 100?
