What do you think this warm up will do to the ice this weekend with it being so cold lately to pretty nice out in just a day or 2. I will be up there from Saturday to Tuesday. I am guessing it will be moving around pretty good. What are your experiences?

“warm up” is a relative term right?

During the upcoming “warm up” the lake will still be making ice. Go drink beer, talk smart, and have fun!

Expect some good cracks to form. Go through resorts and follow what they lay out.

A good thing to be aware of that’s for sure. What will happen we just don’t know. Snow on the ice sure helps when the sun is out but you can’t do anything when the air temp rises.

Same goes for any lake with miles of open water. Be careful out there in the evenings.

biggill and Christian offer great advice. On the big lake I always prefer to stay on plowed/traveled roads whenever I can. #1 you can actually see any larger cracks that form on the road – go slow. #2 the road freezes down sooner and deeper than areas with more snow cover. It is ALWAYS a good idea to talk with local resorts about ice conditions. They put more ice miles on in a week than many ice anglers do in an entire winter. Have fun!

Thanks for the tips. We stayed out on Cyrus’s road. We were sitting on 35″ of ice and were 1.1 miles our over the island and had the ice shift us about a foot to the south as a pressure ridge formed right off shore on the road. Needless to say my wife did not care to much for that hahahahaha. Cyrus had a new road plowed shortly after and all was good. The fishing could have been better but we still caught fish. My 2 yr old caught his first walleye jigging all by himself so a proud papa moment right there.
