I am looking at buying some lead core rods and I am wondering if anyone has any experience with the 5′ short rods? The ones I am considering are a cabelas brand but I know Scheels makes some still. I found some all set up with Okuma CV 30D Convector line counter reels each loaded with 100 yards of 18# Leadcore line. The short rods just have me concerned. Any thoughts would be apprecited.

I run the “runt” 5′ rods from limit creek and absolutely love them! They have amazing action I can tell you anytime I pick up any little debris just from watching the rod tip. And they are a lot of fun to fight fish on! My 7 year old son hated trolling a few years ago now when he’s in the boat all he wants to do is troll leadcore.

I picked up a runt for the first time last week, certainly a smoother action then the Cabela’s, I was afraid it would absorb too much to show lure vibrations but glad to hear they work great. The cabelas definitely show lure vibe good.

Is $150 for two of these complete setups a fair deal?

The convectors run about $75 each, so two of those with leadcore (5 colors on each) new would run you around $170 before any tax etc…. Then you have another $60 in the two rods. As long as those reels are in decent shape, it’s not a bad deal, and you don’t have to set them up. Your time is worth something.

Didn’t see they were 10 color leadcores, that adds another $20 to the value. I personally don’t run 10 colors on any reels, but that’s just my preference.
