I bought a Marlin guild gun in 45/70. This thing is really fun to shoot. I have it fitted with a ghost ring sight and shoot lead reloads that are on the mild side. My question is, are there any public ranges in s.e. Wisconsin that have metal targets? I live in Milwaukee Co. so buying and setting up a range is not possible, thanks.

This sounds like an interesting rifle. I’m curious what you mean when you say it’s a “guild gun”?

I normally associate the term “guild gun” with European firearms that were not made by a single maker, but rather members of a gun making guild each applied their individual trades (actioning, barrelmaking, stockmaking, engraving, etc) to produce a firearm that was then sold on without a maker’s name.

I have yet to see a lever action rifle that was a guild gun using this definition. What’s the history of your rifle?

The term guide gun refers to guides that desired close range quick follow-up rifles when backing up clients in dangerous situations. In this case it’s a Marlin 1895 leaver action with a 18.5 inch barrel and open sights. My mod to it was to install a ghost ring sites with interchangeable apertures to suit my desires at the time…now, if you’re question was based off my misspelling guide, then I hope your chuckle was pleasing.

Your misspelled word confused the Grouse.

the term guide gun refers to…

Guide gun, not guild gun. I get it.

I wasn’t chuckling. You happened to pick a wrong word that could have made sense. I thought it might be possible that at some time there could have been a guild that got together to make lever-action rifles, but I’ve never heard of such a thing. The only guild rifles I’ve ever seen have been rifle/shotgun combinations.

Those are a neat idea especially for small game. I did run across one that briefly caught my eye, it was a 22lr on top and a 410 below.

I have the 45/70 bug, it will likely be one of my next most likely gun purchases. Why not own a caliber capable of taking everything in North America.
