Which reel is prefered if I want one that will handle at least 150 to near 200 yds of 17 lb mono. It must have a very smooth drag that will apply at least a minimum of 15 lbs of pressure, with a high speed retrieve at around 36 inches per turn or more. I find this usually in a 4000 series reel. In this day and age I’m probably looking in the $200 dollar range +/- $50.

It’s purpose is for salmon fishing from a river bank in the weeks of October attached to a medium Im6 7ft pole that can handle casting lures up to 1 oz very well.

Just started using a Daiwa BG 2500 and I love it. I assume I’d love the 4000. Holds close to 200 yards of 17# mono.

I got the reel because of the positive reviews I saw online.

For those of you that fish the open waters of Lake Michigan or the like, is there any difference in the reel to where I’m proposing?

okuma abf 55 holds 240 of 18 lb test 19 lb drag, used that size reel for downrigging worked great, we always used 17 lb stren fishing for big kings.

Agree with Pug that the daiwa bg reels are great.

I’d look at the Penn Battle II reel. They are really meant for saltwater but I use them for freshwater and have them in 2000, 2500, 3000. I use the 3000 for pike. The 4000 is about a hundred bucks.

I have the Daiwa BG 2500 and Penn 4000 Fierce 2 Bait Runner. Both are solid reels. The main difference between the Penn 4000 and Daiwa 4000 is the Daiwa has one more bearing and stronger max drag. Penn 13# and Daiwa 17.5#

Matt, that’s funny you mention it. The Battle II is what I was planning on buying for a starter inshore reel when I was considering moving back to the Tampa area a couple years ago. After I decided to stay here, I was still considering buying one for bass fishing up here. What do you use yours for mainly?

They are multi purpose for me. I have the larger one setup mainly for pike but I also use it for bass (I’m not a baitcaster guy).

I have the 2000/2500 setup for my walleye rods. They work great….pretty bulletproof setups.

Shoot, Amazon has the Penn BII for 25-34% off on all sizes except the 4000.

Only one 5000 size 2-pack left!

I use to be a Shimano reel fan. My last three reels have been Daiwas. Solid reels.
