Add to all these problems the agreement that the DNR made with the tribes for the next three seasons and I just feel like throwing in the towel, at least for the rest of this season, if not longer.

Until then, there was always hope that next year will be better. Now we know it won’t.

Perhaps now’s not the best time to report that some early information from the fall forage population and walleye population assessments currently underway are not encouraging. But there you have it…IDO forum, the leading news information source for all things Mille Lacs related. roll

resorts on the north and east side will receive little to nothing of increased business from this tourney. marketing to guys where the weigh in and take off are minutes from a casino hotel is a pretty tough nut to crack.

Very special. They are referred to as minnesota tax payers and employers. Much like the famous fortune 500 companies this state is known for.

As primarily a bass guy who fishes walleye occasionally, I don’t want to see Mille Lacs change from a walleye lake to a “bass lake”, and I don’t see why it would ever have to be one or the other if managed correctly.

I like watching the tourneys and I’m going up, but won’t be out on the lake. I just want to go to the expo. I don’t see how another year of the top 100 bass guys touting the lake as the #1 smallmouth fishery AND talking about how many walleye they caught out there is such a negative thing for some people.

Also, I believe the #1 reason bass fishermen won’t make up for the lost walleye business is because we don’t require live bait.

It seems the dead horse is alive and well, but I probably don’t have anything new to add. I’ll try to leave it alone. waytogo

It is amazing how some people thrive and even have fun about others misfortunes. There are real families being affected by the mismanagement of our natural resources. These people who spent decades and generations working hard to build what they have… and when the DNR and other entities step in and ruin it all… all some can do is poke them with a stick and laugh. Poke the wrong person and you might get more than a laugh out of it. It’s real up there… and pretty cozy behind your keyboard.

To the original question, I think it is a combination of the waning season, change of seasons, school has started, and ML is no longer a destination fishery for most MN fisherman.

In my view, the ML season is over. I like to fish for pike, walleye, musky, and crappies. Aka, “real fish have teeth”, plus a pan fish. I’ll rarely target bass. All of those things I can do within 15 minutes of home. I don’t need to drive to ML to chase musky, pike, and crappies, and I can catch bonus 20″+ walleyes 20 minutes from home.

Pile on top of that the three year deal the DNR signed under the table and I’ve thrown in the towel for now. That deal ensures that there will be summer C&R seasons with closures until at least 2021. It won’t matter if the allocated quota jumps to 500,000 lbs in two years. 50% of that will go to the tribe. 250,000 will go to non-tribal people, minus the prior years overage that we keep running.

    2021. Let that sink in.

A lot will change in my life by 2021.
Our vehicles will be paid off.
Our house will be nearly paid off.
I’ll be about 10 years from retirement.
I’ll start shopping for probably my last boat.
And if ML opens back up, I’ll probably be adding a for sale sign up there and shopping for a different place to spend my summers during retirement.
So yeah, I’ve thrown in the towel for now.

There are probably a lot of people that fish ML that are or are close to throwing in the towel after this season’s mess. So I can understand why the ML forum might be quiet.

And to the point of it being touted the #1 Bass lake in the country… shouldn’t the land value up there double over night ? Yet it continues to decline ? Very weird… crazy

2021?…4 years from now, I will be retired and living up there. Throwing in the towel? Not this guy…not when I can wake up every morning with view like this. Should it be a surprise that catching AND keeping walleyes is not my only reason for living? There are almost infinite experiences to be had in retirement or life that is to be treasured. If walleye fishing is one of them, so be it, but my life will not revolve around that. I think it laughable that I would change my direction based on that alone. There will be fishing on Mille Lacs and whatever is allowed I will be happy with whatever that may be. My life will not improve if all I do is complain about what I don’t have or cannot do.
Oh, and BTW…I can get Red Lake walleye at CUB foods. devil

I don’t think that’s the case. I think mostly there are genuine disagreements about a very complex matter here.

What ever happened to the leaked agreement between the dnr and the glifwc? At the time it was being talked about as the holy grail. Now it seems like no more than a Dixie cup.

I am also very curious to see if they will go muskie fishing with Gene Miller again this year during their live online broadcast. Last year they caught a 52″ while going live. I thought it was pretty entertaining, but Gene is a very polarizing fisherman with the die-hard <strong class=”ido-tag-strong”>muskie guys against his style of catching and unhooking fish and I’m sure they heard about it.

    will

    Will,
Gene Miller sent you a note…
I will be muskie fishing with Master of Ceremony Bassmasters Dave Mercer, Facts of Fishing TV show host on Friday morning. We will live steam from my boat and give tournament updates. You can watch us live at Bassmaster.com and hopefully we will be fighting the new Minnesota State Record muskie live on camera! I believe and I know many kids believe! The Muskieman”

You misunderstood. The walleye fishing isn’t the cause of the move. The move has been planned for a while. ML is our current get away while we work in the metro. It is a great multi-species fishery and a getaway close enough to the twin cities to be convenient. The move was planned as part of settling into the retirement life.

The example is just to show that four years from now many things will change in all of our lives.

Is that true? Summer catch and release only until 2021?

Not exactly. I don’t have copy of the agreement but I have previously read it. Basically what it does is lock us into a multi-year plan for harvest including agreements of how to handle overages. It is very likely, if not a certainty, that each of the next 3 years will include catch and release only for at least part of the summer… I personally will however take a more optimistic view that don’t think a complete shutdown is likely going forward.

I think the Bass tournament is a great thing for Mille Lacs and MN in general and I will definitely be following along online. It is a very cool format and I really wish that the walleye tour had a similar on-line presence.

    will

Looking online now…”at the tanks”, Seth Feider due to weigh in shortly. Top bag right now is 24-15. Is pretty cool to follow live right now… peace

Seth Feider just weighed in at 22-8, good for 7th place. But there are still more that have yet to weigh in.

I went exploring today driving from south to north and back again. It was fun to see the bass masters elite out there.

On the return trip south there were a pile of boats working the rocks on the east side.

I stopped on the south side for an 18″. Nothing fancy.
Don’t tell anyone that I was casting a new area for pike. Shh.

Those guys do know how to fish.

Must’ve been kinda fun cruising around out there today though. A different experience out there seeing them from the lake. Thinking some have some prime spots that they’re holding out on for the final day Sunday. Perhaps some areas in the NW corner?

Steve Fellegy is becoming more and more “peculiar”. I have no idea and will not speculate on anything but he continues to further and further remove himself from our modern day society. Not too long ago he was very active on FB with multiple posts and comments daily. He has since shut down his FB account and has gone completely silent. Worse yet, he will not even talk to me anymore and he is right next door to me at Mille Lacs. I’ve tried to reach out…no idea? sad

Thats to bad. Steve for my money is the go to guy on the Walleye debacle. And it doesn’t matter if you agree with him or not. He knows the history from day one and has the articles and conversation to back up what he says. He does what many of us do, presents the facts and lets everyone digest them and form their own opinion.

I don’t know what is happening and it’s not my business. Everybody goes thru stuff or just needs to back away every now and then. Maybe (hopefully) it’s something simple and he brings his knowledge back and shares it with those of us who really want to know.
