So you think that Jerry Kill used his health condition to bail out on the U because he wasn’t cutting it?
Absolutely not. I don’t question his health condition one bit — however, in my opinion there’s a difference between resigning and retiring. When a guy uses the word RETIRE and says “I don’t have any more energy. None. I’ve left it all here in the great state of Minnesota. And I have no regrets,” and then he’s back as an OC for an opponent after just 1 season off, I think it’s fair to ask questions.
Finally, I can’t honestly thing that you believe his current responsibilities as OC at Rutgers are the equivalent of a head coaching position at the U and that he should have just toughed it out?
I didn’t say that and no, I don’t believe that.
You’re cherry-picking Kill’s record a bit. He was 29-29 in games as head coach of the University of MN. Also, I can think of a few coaches who wish they had teams good enough to go 14-21 record in Big 10 games. And that wasn’t even his recored “with his own team”, because as you know, a coach’s record doesn’t count until he’s turned over 100% of the team that was left from his predecessor.
Sorry, but padding the “W” column against teams like New Hampshire, Eastern Illinois, Middle Tennessee State, Kent State, etc, just doesn’t do much for me. Just my personal opinion. I know every big school has soft parts of their schedule like that, but if you’re a Big 10 coach, you better compete in the conference as well. Kill had only one season with a winning conference record. I’m not saying he was garbage, but to me that also doesn’t quite add up to “the guy who would have finally made something happen.”
We’ll never know where the program would have gone, but I just liked the style. All the coaching, none of the rah-rah.
To be clear, I loved Kill’s attitude and would take that kind of a coach over PJ 10 times outta 10. I actually would’ve loved to have rolled with Jerry for 20 years, but it’s not because I thought he was on the brink of taking the Gophers to new heights; it’s because I don’t like this stupid cycle of spending more and more money on new coaches just to get the same results every year. It’s ridiculous to me.
