I had the great fortune of planning a route for Levi Vitek and his friends recently. The group had 4 days to spend in the Boundary Waters around the last week of May. I gave them 2 route options, one shorter and the other significantly longer. I mentioned if they wanted to spend more time fishing the shorter route would not shy them of some good action. The longer route–I mentioned–would be a lot of work, covering a lot of ground, but would give them a shot at some big walleye in the 30″ range. Since both routes ended at the same point, I left it up to them to decide which way to go when the time came to make that choice; I didn’t really think they would take the longer route. Upon return from their trip I had just finished hearing the story of a different group’s big walleye taping in at 28″ when Levi brought his camera to the counter. At first glance I thought the fish would have been about 30″, but the fingers holding it were so small. When they showed me the picture of the beast lying in the canoe I knew I had grossly under-guessed her mass! She taped in at 34″ Flat, was fought on 6# test and brought up on a 5 foot ultralight rod. They were so proud of releasing her unharmed and Levi said he will definitely be getting a replica made! There’s a post on here about where the next record walleye will come from… I’ve got a bid on a lake in the BWCA.
