So sad! Come on people teach your kids to check ice before going out. This sucks so bad.

I don’t think this post is accurate. I’m reading one teenage boy went in, then someone tried to rescue him and also went in. They were able to get the rescuer out quickly but not the teen. They did eventually get the teen out. No word on the condition of either yet.

Not trying to be rude but this isn’t quite the same as “3 kids through the ice.”

So sad. Drove by this lake on Thursday and there were several holes the geese had kept open. Woodbury with two different rescues in one day.

Earlier in the day, Woodbury first responders made another water rescue on Wilmes Lake. Police said Minnesotans should be weary of ice on lakes and ponds.

I would guess they were not fishing. It is known as a shallow freeze out lake.
Unlucky or ignorant. Either way its all on them.

Seems like a reasonable time to post this one. From the DNR.

I wanna know where that guy is fishing. Nice pike!!!

Too bad about all the people going through the ice. It happens every year and of course, just before Christmas.

I apologize for getting the facts wrong, but in my defense, it is exactly what was reported by INews when I made the post.

I sincerely hope the teen who had to be recovered from under the ice by divers was rescued in time. I have not seen a condition report yet today.

I did hear there were two juveniles near Rochester on Silver Creek Reservoir Monday evening around 8 pm that had to be rescued after the ice began to crack around them while 150 yards from shore.

I would add links to these stories if it would post, but this site denies posts most times when links are included.

Not surprising that the early information was not totally accurate because it sounds like a crazy scene. I didn’t mean to point fingers at you personally or anything.

I’ll add on here Gim, when’s the last time you saw any clear, solid ice? Been quite a while for me. The white ice with air entrapped isn’t as strong and that’s most ice I’ve seen for the past few years, save one time on the backwaters of the river we were fishing 4″ of perfectly clear solid ice, on foot obviously.

Good points KPE. Best to stay safe, and just check it yourself, one step at a time. Just because one spot is 6 inches doesn’t mean the whole lake is either. Could be a 3 inch spot nearby which is bad news.

Last year. During the short window for ice fishing in southern MN I was fishing on 10-12 inches of clear ice.

    Update:
The 16 year old boy, Yahye Abdi, who was the first to go through the ice and was recovered underwater by divers, has died.
The 12 year old girl, who fell through while attempting to assist him, remains hospitalized.

Sad deal for sure. I’ve been jogging around Markgrafs and Powers lakes in Woodbury for lots of years. As mentioned above, it’s not uncommon for the geese to keep a small section of water open on the north end of Markgrafs. Based on the busted up and now refrozen ice on the north end, it appears that’s where they broke through the ice and the rescue boat traveled to reach them. I hadn’t been around Markgrafs in a couple of weeks so I can’t say for sure the geese had kept a section open on the north end, but most years they do.

I also jogged around Powers lake in Woodbury this morning and there’s several hundred geese keeping an area on the southeast part of the lake open. Once it gets cold enough to force the geese to move, that section will freeze over. But it will be thin ice for a while, while the rest of the lake will have safe ice. Scary situation for sure.
