2nd smitty

Have a small one man, and have much of the necessities for ice in and everything else out to keep light and mobile. Doesn’t make pulling any easier sometimes in this snow. Like my city lakes so pulling is only option.

Have a nice smitty made for it, but contemplating on throwing some gear in a smaller sled behind on a smaller smitty.

Maybe some have tried it here, what did you think? Maybe some math guys can break down weight to surface area friction equations and let me know if this idea seems legit.

Nothing real valuable to add other than you might have issues tracking with a second sled. You might need to consider a rigid tow bar type rig to make sure your second sled isn’t always trying to wander off in a different direction. Let us know what you come up with!

Find somebody to tag along and make them pull the second one.

The friction equations won’t help you much- the differences are not in the main terms that are easily modeled, but in the smaller ones, that are not. I am guessing, but I would guess one difference is the 2 sleds are not always int line, and so would fight each other a bit. If you wanted to save that drag, maybe figure a way to hook the skis of the second sled to the tail of the first, so it stays in line and the skis stay in the tracks of the first. You might even consider cutting the shovels off of the “caboose sled” and overlapping the fronts on top of the tails of the skis of the “engine sled”. That would be almost as efficient as 1 long sled, I believe.

You should also tune your skis to minimize the effort. I see people pulling their Smitty sleds across the parking lot. There are many videos on Youtube. You don’t need to tune for a downhill, but filling the base holes and gouges, taking the nicks out of the edges with a stone or file, and a coat of any way will cut your effort by half.

I whipped together a sled the other day. I strung the rope thru some PVC pipe to help with the tracking. It seems to help. I also added wheels to the back so when I am on the concrete I can move it around like a wheelbarrow. Now I need to go test it out.
