Going to pick up a 270. What are some good ammo choices to try out? It will be used for deer and antelope

Nothing against a standard 270 but if you have not already purchased the rifle, I would take a look at the 270 Win short. If you look at the ballistics between the two there is a rather large difference. The 270 Win short is much flatter out to much longer ranges and that may be helpful when hunting antelope. As far as ammo goes I’ve had excellent success with the trophy bonded from winchester. I’m not sure if they still make it. I bought several boxes a few years back so have not even looked to see if its still available.

I have been a big fan of Federal Fusion for factory ammo. It seems like about 90% of the rifles I know of that have shot it, its a sub MOA ammo. Matter of fact, a buddy just shot some in his A-bolt -06 for the first time this weekend and it was about 1/2 MOA. I shot Fusion in my 270 for about 10 years before getting on the hand-loading wagon.

More than a specific brand, the thing I think is most important is to try different bullet weights and see if the rifle has a strong preference. Most 270s are going to be happiest with 130 to 150 in the standard twist rates, but to every rule…

For antelope, you might wish to try something on the lighter end to shoot flatter, but again testing is key because you could drop out of range the barrel twist will optimally stabilize.

For the factory ammo users out there, I’d say get going and find your ammo. Time is a ticking and supplies this year will dry up FAST.

I would stay away from the ballistic Tip ammo. I had real poor results on deer with it. Shot great, but poor performance on impact.

Me too. Winchester Ballistic Silvertips made for zero blood trail. Luckily I recovered the deer, but after 2 deer with no blood on heart shots I quit shooting them.

Been shooting 130 grain Hornady American Whitetail and have been very happy with the results on whitetail.

All the 270s I load for really like the 130-140gr Bullets. I’m a Barnes fan, absolutely hate the fragmenting Bullets. I know they’ve been around a long time, but can’t beat the penetration and devastation from a copper bullet that retains its weight.

For manufacturers, you really need to experiment with them till you find the one it likes. Every rifle is bored slightly different in addition to its twist rate. Some like faster some a little slower.

My suggestion is to find the cheapest lead Bullets and do a break in procedure (assuming your buying new). After 40 to 50 rounds, try 5 shot groups of each manufacturer/style and you’ll find the one
