I have a 99 25 hp mercury outboard. I blew out the exhaust manifold gasket and now it is leaking water. I ordered the new gaskets and got a service manual. The service manual said torque the bolts to 140 ft lbs in sequence. Doesn’t 140 ft lbs seem like a lot? My torque wrench only goes up to 80 ft lbs….any opinions would be appreciated.

I would say definitely inch pounds. If your wrench goes low enough you can get by with just goin to 11.6666666 (or 12) foot pounds. I am not a certified mechanic but I have worked on several OMC outboard that is how I have installed several gaskets over the years with out failure. YMMV.

    140 ft pounds-goodbye threads.In a similar part(Yamaha),it calls for about 9 ft lbs final torque.Many call for a 2-step torque sequence.Also check part for warp-age before reinstall.

most definitely inch pounds !! it could of been a misprint as said above but most often anything under fifteen pounds feet is read in inch pounds .

edit to ad, to figure inch pounds divide the number by 12,IE, 144 inch pounds = 12 foot pounds.
and there is another way read it pounds inch or pounds foot and that can make it confusing for some.
