22 blanks

I’m trying to find louder 22 blanks for dog training. Currently using crimps and want to step up the sound level. Does anyone know if these actuated loads from Menards will work in a popper gun? Asked in another way – will anything be shot out of the gun or is it just the noise? I can’t seem to get a firm answer either way.

That’s what I used in my field trialing blank pistol. They work fine.

I always heard not to field train with a .22 just due to the fact the tone is nothing of a shotgun, any truth to that ? I don’t have hunting dogs so I’m just curious.

My group, with a lot of dogs, always trained with .22 if we weren’t shooting live birds and seemed to carry over fine to using shotguns. I don’t think dogs are that dumb that the different noises make much difference. I also don’t know why it would need to be louder. If you are noise conditioning just use a shotgun and start further away.

Shot gun further away is what the trainer I know does. Has nothing to do with being a dumb dog or not.

When I introduced my golden retriever to gun, I started with a .22 blank pistol, then 410, 20 ga and finally 12. The trainer who introduced my current lab use both regular 12 gauge shells but also poppers which are just the primer.

I was trying to think of where them sounding different could matter. Training stop on shot with a .22 they’d also stop on a shotgun shot. For noise conditioning we’d use either or both, just different distances, and eventually work up to close shotgun.

Check to see if they are the same length as the ones you currently use or that they will fit your your popper gun. I have a starter pistol that I use for training that uses short blanks. I bought some blanks made for dummy launchers that were too long and didn’t work, they bottomed out on the cylinder so it couldn’t close. The ones from Menards are probably for the concrete anchor guns they sell and might be a different length.

thanks for the help guys. a 22 or 209 is pretty much what everyone uses unless they use a boom (propane) gun. No one uses shotguns unless you’re shooting live flyers. And I should clarify – this isn’t for intro to gun, this is just for every day training on marks and you just want something to get the dogs attention when the gunner is 200 yards out in the field
