The Vikings are at 9-2 and seemingly writing off the QB who has helped get them there. Bold move.

?? I only see it as injury insurance, how could Sam feel negatively about that? Jones has lost his way and needs his confidence completely rebuilt, that’s what KOC is good at…This move is just as much about next season as it is the rest of this one… Darnold will sign elsewhere next season for way more than the Vikings would be willing to pay him

JJ is the future, Jones would be a great backup for him IF he’s willing to play that role next year and beyond…

That’s my question. Does the MN Faithful support blindly letting this guy walk if he gets you to the NFC Championship Game/SB or even wins the franchise’s first Lombardi trophy? Are you confident that JJ or Danny Dimes put you back at 9-2 through the first 11 games next season? It is a unique situation and there’s no denying that.

As stated, I understand the insurance policy and depth reasoning. At the same time, Darnold is human and can see people jockying the roster for life “after” him…with a lot of season and potential playoff run yet to go.

For reference, Darnold is on pace to throw for 32 TDs and 4200 yards in his FIRST season with the team and system at age 27. Crazy to just consider that a “placeholder” when he could have one of the best 5 or 6 seasons for a Vikings QB EVER by most statistical measures.

Let’s worry about that if and when it happens. As of right now Jones signed for the rest of this year. That’s it.

That decision to sign/not sign is why/how KOC makes his money…

Yeah if Darnold gets a sb victory he will be immortalized by fans and the organization and we would likely give away the farm to try and keep him to make the money work because they’d be afraid of backlash if they let him walk. Let’s worry about that IF it happens.

    Yes,

Darnold was good/great the first 5 games or so, the last 6 serviceable/liability. He is just an average QB and i wouldn’t hamstring the other needed positions by paying for Darnold more then we are this year. Maybe I will be wrong, but I do not see him ever living up to whatever next contract he signs.

I am more concerned on keeping B Flo and his defense around.

If they go to/win the Superbowl they could go 0-16 the next 5 years and i wouldn’t care.

^That seems to be the consensus opinion with most of my friends who are Vikings fans as well. I doubt Darnold will ever be Mahomes/Brady/Lamar/Allen, but he’s got some talent. Some teams spend a lot of time chasing that “HOF” caliber QB never to get off the QB carousel to build around a “Good” one.

It will be an interesting offseason in Minnesota with decisions on Darnold, whether to start JJ day 1 or go with another bridge, what to do with Aaron Jones, does Harrison Smith stick around at his age, trying to keep one of the better DC’s in Flores around, etc.

Can they just pay him like a HC and give him the associate coach label or something. Give the guy like $5m and keep him around as long as possible

I don’t believe Darnold’s feelings are hurt or this came as any type of surprise to him. I think he knows the plan and he’ll now have a shot at a decent multi-year starter contract somewhere else – he wouldn’t have had a prayer at something like that before this year. Both sides are getting what they need out of the deal – and if we by some freak of nature win an SB, well… bonus.

    Jard Goff
    2,761 yds 20 TD 9 INT QBR 57.7 (18th)
    Sam Darnold
    2,717 yds 21 TD 10 INT QBR 59.4 (14th)

Think Sam is doing just find and better then most expected. Last two games stopped forcing and just took what was open. Hoping he can continue on that trend.

Lots of jumping to wild conclusions on this danny jones deal. Darnold is the man this year, just like the Vikings he controls his own destiny. Dude balls out in the playoffs they extend him. He plays flat or starts throwing picks like Love then it’s so long after this year. I’d rather have Jones than Rypien on the depth chart. Win win. It’s not like they signed Brett Hundley….

Regardless, Darnold is gonna get paid next year. If he takes them on a deep run I’d love to see them extend him and let JJ sit another year. The fact JJ hasn’t been able to practice really sets him back so a full year practicing behind Darnold might be good.

Vikes are in pretty enviable shape as far as QB’s go. A productive and low paid veteran and a promising rookie on his initial contract. DJ is a great insurance policy at this point.

I agree. I don’t know why everyone feels the need to anoint McCarthy as the chosen one. He has literally not played a single regular season snap and will be coming off a major injury. He could just as well be a colossal failure as he could be successful. Tossing him in there week 1 next season isn’t likely given he has had zero experience this season other than watching a screen. His whole progression year as backup QB has been moved back a year. Assuming Darnold is not here next season, Jones would be the starter in week 1 next September.

Nobody anointed him. If you draft a QB in the first round especially in the top half yes the plan is to play that guy. Why could he not start game 1 next year? Other first round picks in history have done it plenty.

So you are assuming Darnold is not on the team and at the same time Daniel Jones is? rotflol

If all your crystal ball predictions come true. I will bet you JJ starts week 1 over Danny Dimes.

The big question is when will JJ be 100% physically. If he has a full training camp 100% healthy I can see him starting. Some of these injuries can linger and they’re always cautious with knees.

You should write for them. whistling

He is basically a free agent tryout with the vikes right now. AKA the practice squad. Yet you have him signed next year already. He hasn’t even made it to Minnesota yet. So to think he is bridging JJ next year and Darnold is singning for 10 years 4 billion elsewhere is funny to me.

About as predictable as the weather. Actually probably less.

Get your parade route chairs out. It’s a shame half of you will be chanting for JJ as Darnold rides the parade float with the trophy though

I see no downside in bringing Jones in as a backup. Nothing more or less.
