Not really. Some teams still do it. The Packers seem to have it down pretty well with Favre/A-Rodg and A-Rodg/Love.

The difference being both those guys hade a HOF QB ahead of them. Different than having a 21-35 career record guy ahead of you.

Patrick Mahomes sat for an entire season behind Alex Smith too. He’s pretty good.

And so is Joe Burrow and CJ Stroud and Peyton Manning and plenty of others. There is no recipe for success at that position or everyone would have one. There is a recipe for failure though, and that is the Christian Ponder treatment. Reaching to pick them, handing them the job with no competition, having marginal talent around them on and off the field (coaches), and then being amazed that it didn’t work out. See also: Justin Fields and Mitch Trubisky.

What is the percentage of 1st round quarterback picks that pan out during their rookie contract and what is the percentage that actually develop into a franchise quarterback ?

It does not help most of these guys (1st round drafted QBs) that they walk into situations beyond dismal, but I am not sure how that system or process will ever change …

I’m all for letting JJ sit until the staff feels like they’re ready to hand him the reigns. My biggest wish is that when they do eventually make the hand over from Darnold to JJ, they can’t let it be some “trial period” where Darnold gets the job back if JJ struggles early. That is one of the worst ways to mess with a QBs head and make them second guess literally everything they do.

If the team waiting to put him in means that they will do it when they’re behind him 100% then I’m ok with that path forward.

I have no clue what this means as far as health moving forward. Hopefully he can recover fully and it not be an issue in the future.

Well so much for who the season starting QB will be. Not sure how long a torn Meniscus will keep him out. Sometimes those are short and other times long.

They should have him work out with Buxton so he can learn how to stay healthy.

Said on radio it depends on the procedure. A snip few weeks if fully repaired it is months.

I heard it on the radio too. It could be as brief as a few weeks or it could be as long as few months.

The Vikings curse still lingers on. Really can’t make some of this stuff up and it keeps happening year after year.

My excitement for the Vikings this year just went down the toilet and it’s not even week 2 of the preseason. Painful to be a Vikings fan.

great, lets lose out, get the 1st overall pick and trade it for a King’s ransom…JJ is now 1/4 of the way to Penix’s surgery count…

in all seriousness, that just sucks..

JJ was not going to start anyway, save for Darnold being very bad. This will allow JJ to really soak in the offense.
He will still get work in, I have know many people that have had meniscus repairs. All are on their feet right away, and with pain management are doing just about anything with in weeks. that is not saying he will be running drills, but he will not be a wheelchair. he will get his work in and will be more prepared when he is healed. It will be alright

    Exactly.

Its definitely a set back in progression as it was possible the only live game action he might have seen in the near future was pre season football. Clearly even if its a minor issue, he won’t be playing any pre season now.

Perhaps the worst part is that it elevates Mullens to the back up QB spot.

He will be missing plenty of reps and learning in his rookie season.
Willing to bet they do a full repair which will most likely result in zero reps this season.

Maybe he can mold the inner “Favre Gunslinger” talent he has…

He’s definitely a gunslinger. Tosses for 400 yards and 2 TDs but throws 3 picks along the way…

He’s going to get done right and fully repaired. No sense risking future issues for his sake.

2025 OTAs will be the next time we see him on the field doing any meaningful reps..

Agree. Has nothing to do with whether he is playing in actual games. But he will be missing key development. Can only hope he recovers quickly but still terrible news.

Sounds like he’ll miss the remainder of pre-season, which is valuable, but be in playing shape very early in the reg season. Let’s hope Darnold can be steady and uninjured himself. Jaren Hall is NOT a pro quarterback.
