Set up in a staging area before a bean field. By next weekend these beans won’t have any green leaves on them. All summer I seen 3 bucks in these beans that I would shoot.
Big thick bedding area just to the east of me.
Let’s see if anyone shows up tonight.
Very nice Micheal. I’m dealing with some heart break. I took a shot and was deflected I think. Full pass but all stomach matter i think. Unless its liver very dark icky purple red brown. But doesnt stink like stomach , I shot him at about 7 and going to go start looking at 1. Not the way it was supposed to go.
Nice job Michael and good luck BC, definitely looks like liver. Too bad itbis not colder and you could leave it until morning. I only had small doe come through at last light and there was no way I was shooting her a mile back in a swamp.

Yeah this heat is not a good thing. And I can sleep, been trying to nap but can’t
Good luck BC!
Thank you everyone.
All the scouting I did on this piece paid off.
I had been watching 3 good bucks hit this bean field all summer. Put boots on the ground in early August. Picked out a couple of trees for some different winds. The tree I was in tonight was the best set up but needed a southerly wind.
It was tight on the edge of where I thought some of the deer were bedding.
It’s pretty thick with weeds and saplings 25 yards east of me.
At 7:15 I heard something and instantly I was that’s a deer so I slowly grabbed my bow.
This guys head popped out of the weeds at 25 yards.
He is on a path that is going to bring him by at 15 yards.
When he got behind a limb from the tree I am in I slowly drew.
When he hit my window I stopped him and the arrow was on its way.
I knew o stately it was a perfect hit.
He ran about 80 to 100 yards and I lost sight of him in some weeds. Then he gave out this big long grunt and I knew he was dieing.
Packed up my stuff. Grabbed my arrow and walked to the last place I seen him. There he laid dead.
I gross scored him at 140 6/8. A couple of his mass measurements broke 5”.
He is quartered up and in a cooler with ice on him.
Good job Micheal. Mine was dead 50 yards from where I shot it. Weird lung liver gut went in really side ways I think being deflected by a small tree. I went and found it then called a buddy to come get some practice with his new pup. Dog lead us right to it
Wow that’s great news. Glad you found your buck BC! Congrats!!

I’m just happy it was a lethal hit. I wasn’t confident for a while.
That’s a beauty of a buck Mike, what part of the state did he come from
West central MN. Zone 278.
I can’t help but think of how great it is that we met up on the rainy river this spring and talked about hunting seasons. Then both making it happen on opening night.

Absolutely, I agree. We should meet up again to shoot the poop. Maybe do some fall fishing now.
It is kind of bittersweet. I love to be on the chase for a buck, never tagged out so early. I guess for me ill get another doe and move on to a wi property.
That sounds like a great idea.
I have ND and SD tags as well.
The last year I didn’t hunt the November rut was 2005. I won’t miss that.
Nice bucks guys! Michael you are one of the top tier public guys no doubt. On bucks right away in two different states and kill a 140” class opening day is awesome
Bear- it’s got a leash on it. You sure u didn’t kill someone’s pet buck?
Shhh wait wait, I think I hear a big squirrel coming…
Mine was shot off public as well, the small game guys almost had me leaving due to .22 flying past, the sound of those going by my tree was not great. I would have guessed the deer weren’t moving till dark but it all worked out
Nice BC!
It’s a great feeling to get things figured out and get a good buck down. When its on public that is just icing on the cake.
Nice job BC – it would be wierd feeling being done so quick.
That’s weird to me too but I guess that’s the goal, fill your tag with a solid buck as soon as you can. Mission accomplished even if the seasons open for another 2.5 months.

Still have to get the kid on his buck, we each have to shoot 2 doe, and I want to get a Wisconsin river buck. The doe are easy, but 2 more bucks we will see what happens.
This does open up time for bird hunting tho.
Congrats guys!
I skipped last night to fish, so I’m just making my first sit now. I’m set up on the edge of some oaks leading out to beans. Sure feels good to be out!
Congrats to both of you.
Michael, I appreciate all of your posts these past few weeks. I’m itching to get out there.
