November 9, 2024 at 6:45 pm #2298366Wow that is a beast. Congrats to your friend.
Your not kidding there.
November 9, 2024 at 7:05 pm #2298367Nice!!!!
Had this nine at 18 yrds tonight- no clear shot. He was staring down my doe decoy until a smaller 8 came out. He snort-wheezed and the 8 did a 180 and blew out of there. Big boy I assume chased off the 8 and he was gone.
Pulled cards on my way out. Was little surprised to see a pic of him taking a swim while I was working

Jimmy JonesPosts: 2910November 9, 2024 at 7:33 pm #2298372I filled my bonus antler less tag this afternoon with a corn fed doe. Nothing special, just a good eater.
I had one of the best openers in recent memory. Saw 12 deer including 6 small bucks, 8 wild turkeys, and about two dozen pheasants. Stunning day to sit out there too.
Now I can just wait all week for Mr Big.
That’s a nice for him. Congrats.
November 9, 2024 at 7:57 pm #2298377Cool pics, Randy and nice doe Grim. Good stand placement Michael!
Daughter and I both shot does this evening or I’m pretty sure daughter did. Less then 60 yard shot out of a ground blind in tall alfalfa, hard to find blood in that when it was dark. After she shot it shrugged and just walked straight ahead over a slight elevation change in field, enough where we can’t see from the ground. Had 4 of us looking around in the dark for a while. Going to look dome more for it tomorrow when it’s light out. Hope we find it as it would be her first.

deertrackerPosts: 9253November 9, 2024 at 8:50 pm #2298383I ended up seeing three 8 pointers this evening. All three had a broken tine. Got a video of one making a scrape. Two passed my trail camera. All three had their nose to the ground and headed towards the river.

November 9, 2024 at 8:51 pm #2298385Pretty wild/weird story behind this one. I was just about to get down in my climber and make a little drive to my brother and Dad/nephew. And I stand up and see a deer looking at me at 60ish yards thru brush. I get my gun up and see it’s a 6 that I let pass, it starts walking into thicker brush, so I look off of the scope and see a huge gash on its back. Figured someone must have wounded it this morning.
Wait another 15 minutes and then get down. Walked about 20 feet toward where I saw the deer, and it comes running down the trail right at me. It got to about 10-15 yards and in process I got a better look at the gash on its back and decided to end its misery. Wound ended up looking like an archery wound from a week or two ago. I didn’t get a pic of it but it was dried up and you could see its spine. I was about 1/2 mile back off a rutted up old logging trail, which reaffirmed that no good deed goes unpunished as it was a biayatch getting it out of there with no atv.
My Dad is 76, doesn’t get around too well and therefore not too interested in hunting anymore, and my nephew is on his second season, so it was a little extra special to share a great harvest with them. Good luck tomorrow!

Where did you hit it ? Looks like a steep shot slopes if that’s the in and out on the spine and ribs. Or is the spine thing part of his gash ?
deertrackerPosts: 9253deertrackerPosts: 9253November 10, 2024 at 7:07 am #2298399First deer of the morning is a 6 pointer. Like all the others, nose to the ground on a mission.
DTdeertrackerPosts: 9253November 10, 2024 at 7:18 am #2298400Just saw two more bucks that were circling each other like they were going to fight. Then went out of view. It was right after a rattling sequence.
Going to rattle more today.

That spine area is the gash, it ran thru both sides and probably deflected off the spine and out. I shot it front shoulder quartering too and dumped it immediately. Almost had to step out of the way of it with its momentum.

CaptainMuskyPosts: 23371November 10, 2024 at 11:49 am #2298421Well up here in the big Northwoods it’s awfully quiet. not to mention wet this morning. 5 guys, 1 anterless permit only 1 deer seen without a shot.
I’ll be Here all week, but wondering how thick would broth get with 5 tags?
November 10, 2024 at 12:28 pm #2298423We never found daughters deer, she is bummed and I’m bummed for her. Tough conditions to find blood but I still think she hit it but who knows where. Replaying it this morning, 40 yard broad side shot, she was using a death grip tripod so steady shot. Is it possible not getting good expansion at that short of distance? 6.5 creedmore using 143 grain precision hunters ELD-X.
November 10, 2024 at 12:29 pm #2298424Otherwise, seeing lots of nice deer being shot this weekend. Slow in our area this morning, maybe heard 6 shots.
November 10, 2024 at 1:03 pm #2298429Punched a tag on a doe this am. Felt good to get one with the 12ga again. Had the kid help

November 10, 2024 at 1:38 pm #2298433Opener was great conditions but a quiet morning in the woods north of Park Rapids. Cameras have been busy but only at night so that followed.
For the afternoon my son chose to stay in the woods with Grandad while I jumped out to a small field cut. Bad call for him, good call for me. Had to make a quick shot on him quartering away into the thicket, but “he didn’t goooo 40!”

Michael BestPosts: 1235November 10, 2024 at 4:06 pm #2298447I am set up on the pinch point spot with the decoy out in front of me.
Didn’t see a lot of deer movement this morning. Maybe seen a dozen. Did see 3 really big bucks with one being a 5 point on his left side and the right side was busted off just before the brow tine. I wonder what deer did that to him because he is a big deer.
These deer remind me a lot of Kansas deer. They sure like to fight.Attachments:
