Found a nice spot some new State land to try and trick one before the army arrives. Which I will be a part of.

Wow what a morning I had.
It started off with I spot 2 decent bucks a mile away. As I am making my way over there they get into a short fight. The one is trying to run the other one off but he just keeps circling him.
I close into 400 yards and start rattling. The bucks stop what they are doing and stare my way. Over the hill comes a giant of a 10 pointer. He squares off with the 8 but the fight is over in a second. The 10 walks the 8 off.
I give them 10 minutes and move up to a draw that goes into a decent sized wood lot. I set up and start rattling. after a few minutes here comes the 8 pointer and he stops at 40 yards but no shot. He eventually gives up on not seeing a buck and walks off.

I head back to the truck to make a move and eat a sandwich.
I come across a 30” 3 x 4 muley bedded on the down wind side of a ridge 350 yards from the road. I say down wind but the wind is maybe blowing 3 to 5 mph at most. It’s been breezy every day and the day I find a muley bedded no wind.
I circle around work down the back side of the ridge till I see the little cut that I know he is needed on the other side of. Pop over the ridge and work through the cut. A small 4 x 4 Muley stands up is staring right at me. I draw thinking the big guy is there. He stands up at 50 and I can’t see his body. I take a step to get a better line of site on the body and he bolts. Game over. Just needed 5 more seconds. Or better yet 10 mph more wind.
Btw I seen 3 more coyotes this morning. I think that 18 or 19 for the week.
Sitting by a lone cottonwood just off a creek for the evening. Got the decoy out. It’s amazing how these deer will cover ground to another deer if they see it.

    Thanks Bearcat.
Yeah at first I didn’t know what to think. When a person gets used to hunting an area for a long time. A person can have fear of trying something new.
It has been a lot of fun learning how to hunt these deer in this area.
Even if I don’t connect it’s been a blast and a good season already. I still have next week to make it happen.
Come December it will be coyote time for me and I found a new area to add to the list for calling.

Good luck to you and your son as well as the rest of the IDO people.

Good morning all! First shot was only 13 minutes early so not bad. Haha. One doe right away that kept looking back.

Having a scope issue though. Fine at 1 power but foggy at 12. Never seen that before. doah

Maybe blurry? I can move my head around and it changes a bit. Could moisture only affect it on a higher zoom level?

Real proud of my area. First shot was only 2 minutes early. Saw one 20 min before legal. Acted like a buck, too dark to confirm.

I got in my stand about 6:10 this morning and by 6:35 I had six smooth tops pass within15 yards of the stand’s legs. I bit back the temptation to pop the largest of the six and at 6:45 this 2-1/2 year old 8 pointer come trucking long. I got him to stop the put a pill six inched behind his thinking cap. Dropped on the spot. It’s cool enough that he can lay there and drain while I take a nap and wait on a doe. Or two.

You can see the stand behind the deer.

200grain Fury .40 cal bullet at just under 2900fpd out of my smokeless muzzy. It’s a real terminator.

Someone on a neighboring property just booted a dandy buck past me about 150 yards out. That think covered 200 yards in about 7 seconds.

Nephew and I climbed into a tree behind the house (maybe 300 yards from the house) and had a doe and fawn under us before legal shooting time. It was pretty fun watching them mess around and seeing how he enjoyed it. Fast forward to about 7:45 and a nice mature doe came walking by at about 40 yards. He dropped it with a near perfect shot.

I had my phone on silent and when we got back to the house had pictures from my wife of a pretty decent 10 pointer standing in the driveway (probably 400 yards from where we were). He will be the next target.

Now it’s time to get some stuff winterized and put this kid to work for the day

I left the muzzy at home. For some reason when I got my new breech plug I didn’t throw the bad one away. Now they are mixed up and won’t be able to tell the difference without some testing. doah

Quiet in the blind this morning with junior. Sat for 2 1/2 hours which ended up being about 20min too little. Got back to the house and scanned the field edge with binos and watched a small buck walk 30yds from the blind! I blame my bladder for this one. At least we know they’re around. First shot heard this morning was 6:37 which was right on the money.

Nice Jimmy and congrates to nephew Bucky.

Slow here for daughter and I, just a flock of turkeys. Sounded like a lot of shots coming from across road on other side of the farm.

Slow for us. I had a doe show herself for a second before disappearing in the cattails and my son saw a buck 300yds away. Lots of shooting around us. Hoping for a better evening hunt.

Crazy for this Iowa guy to see people to be gun hunting this time of year. That has to be fun! Was a rain out this morning and have seen two bucks tonight. One trotted by maybe 80 yards. Saw another one a long ways off.

We had rain most of the day today out in SD so I didn’t hunt.
The girl from work that I hung the stand for shot this buck tonight.

I filled my bonus antler less tag this afternoon with a corn fed doe. Nothing special, just a good eater.

I had one of the best openers in recent memory. Saw 12 deer including 6 small bucks, 8 wild turkeys, and about two dozen pheasants. Stunning day to sit out there too.

Now I can just wait all week for Mr Big.
