    Nice

Heck yeah, 13 years old his second bow kill. Deer is down 45 yards from us. We are gonna wait it out and see if a doe comes by for me.
Looked like a small 6 or 8. No swamp monster but a very exciting kill for him

Lol it was a fun hunt to watch. I totally dig double hanging small platform stands. He showed me how to shoot straight after my big miss this morning.
It’s no swamp donkey but it’s a great notch on his belt.

Well the first half day of a 2 week hunt went down at crazy.

Went into a stand this morning that I found back in September. I had hung the stand maybe 8 years ago. This stand had never been hunted until this morning.

At 9 this morning I had a small spike buck that came in and bedded down 20 yards from me.
About 10 minutes later I see another buck in some thick stuff. I slowly pick up my binoculars and see a wide heavy 8 pointer.
I slowly reach for my grunt tube and give a handful of grunts. The spike never even paid any attention to it. By now I can’t see the other buck.
So I grab my rattling antlers and on the back side of the tree from the spike I give a short 15 second rattling sequence.
The spike doesn’t like this. He starts looking up at me. He gets up and slowly walks off in the direction where the other buck is.
All of a sudden a buck comes trotting out of the area heading right to me.
I grab my bow and when the deer gets in the opening I have he stops and I let the arrow fly.
As soon as the deer whirls and runs dead away from me I realize it’s not the wide 8 pointer. 50 yards later the buck goes down.
As I am packing up I catch movement over where I had seen the wide 8 pointer. He is leaving the area.
When I walked out to get my truck I noticed 6 fresh scrapes and a handful of big rubs.
So it’s off to SD in the morning. The buck I shot is a decent buck and will taste great. But a part of me wishes I could have hunted that wide 8 for the next 2 weeks.

Congrats to those that have been successful and good luck to the everyone still hunting.

I knew I would be long winded so made a separate post, shot him morning of the first. Would be a 10 had he not busted up both brows.

Sounds like the hunt itself was alot of fun at least. Crazy you found a stand you hung 8 years ago. And not only that, but the bucks were still utilizing that area heavily. Your buck has double crab claws and no brow tines, that’s kind of neat. In a couple years I bet he would have had a really neat rack.
Just like I told Mason, that buck will eat great. And in the end, that’s what we are looking for. Plenty of life left to chase a bigger one next year.

I commented on your other post, beautiful buck buddy. And I love my lift 33. It’s such a nice bow to shoot. And it looks like it did the trick for you as well.

I walked in at first light just as the rain was letting up. The deer are just starting to move. I’m watching a buck chase a doe around in the bean field right now, and in the last 20 mins 3 different young buck have cruised past me. Hoping the big one slips up before the rain starts again.

    Congrats to your kid bearcat!

A couple guys came into Howie’s yesterday. Obviously hunting something so I started chatting with them. Turns out the one dude shot a big buck at 30 yards and they tracked it for a quarter mile but couldn’t find it and backed out. Bright red blood out both sides so seemed like a good hit. They called the local dog tracker and he met up with them to try and track it down. Apparently a very wide big 8. Hope they found him.

Those were my buddy’s. They didn’t find it. Deer went into neighboring property but they do have permission to access it, going to go help look for it in a little bit. Will let you know if we find it.

I was relieved of my morning dad duties and snuck out to my wi spot. Sitting in a funnel of hardwood going to swamp. Water directly to my back. Volunteered for Sunday night pay and have to be to work by 5 and work all night and tomorrow so hoping the sit makes it worth my sleep sacrifice

We didn’t find it, guessing it was a non fatal hit. Very little blood at last known spot and it traveled a long ways.

That’s a major bummer. By the sounds of it then it will survive. Surprising but tough buggers.

Masons deer last night was hig shoulder no pass through, virtually 0 blood. But the chisel tip did damage and thrashed everything inside. Crazy how destroyed the lungs were but with no pass through we had 3 spots of blood in 50 yards where it laid dead.
Did your buddies track it and push it, was it a pass through, find the arrow ? Sucks loosing deer. Sucks worse when it’s a nice buck.
Last year my buddy shot a nice 10 and could never find it. Dog couldn’t find it the next day. The kid and I stumbled across it over 3/4 of a mile away a week later but he pushed it so hard that deer just ran until it couldn’t. Again very little blood due to no exit hole.
Like masons the blood clot that came out of the shoulder was narly

BC I talked to those guys yesterday and they didn’t find the arrow. They said there was no blood for like 100 yards then it was out both sides. They thought they bumped it once. They waited an hour before taking up tracking which should have been enough. Tough SOB. By the sounds of it it may have been a slightly quartering to shot at least that is what he said. I’m sure it all happened so fast and he didn’t realize everything that was going on but I could tell he was really beat up about it. The way they described the blood once they found it I’m shocked they didn’t recover the deer.

As Captain said, did not find the arrow which obviously can tell a lot. He did find a little white hair at shot site. It appeared bleeding both sides, which indicates pass through but thinking is possible brisket shot, slice it open which would make it look like it’s a pass through. It did sound like they kicked it up once and found blood where it was bedded. The bottom mark on picture is property he was hunting. The top picture is last known drop of blood, which was about the size of sharpie point. The tracking dog picked up trail across the road from that mark but that didn’t have permission yet to access but did gain it. Six of us went into outlined property looking and the island on top of picture. Did not find any blood once it crosses the road. If it kept going to the North and hit the open fields who knows where it went from there with no blood to follow. Would have been interesting if they could have kept going with the dog. I do know I wish I could hunt the property we were pushing sign everywhere! He did all he could, it sucks but as you all said, tough SOBs!

Yeah I felt really bad for him. He came into Howie’s again today and I was excited first thinking he found it. I didn’t talk to him after because I could tell it was weighing on him. He thought this may have been the same deer that eluded him either last year or the year before. Stopped behind a big tree sensed something wrong and turned around. Smart deer for sure.
