Got to sit out for the last 1-1/2 hours last night. Ran 4 does and two baby bucks out of the clover as I walked in.
Had 3rd encounter with this young guy. He was 80-150yrds out for the last half hour. Passed him twice because he is so young. Little does are bigger. But realizing no one around here will pass him during gun season, thinking I screwed up with him at 20 and 30yrds. He stopped by a camera last night to say highAttachments:

Respect. He’ll be a doozy next year if he makes it.

Few people that have seen him are geeking out. He really looks weird because the rack is way too big that that little boy. I don’t think anyone else would pass on him. This is the type of deer that blows up from 140’s to near 200. Definitely has the genes for it. But this is a trophy class deer for many and its not like I can hang a sign on hin “reserved until 2027”
October 24, 2024 at 1:13 pm #2295720I think hes looked at peoples fish pictures on here and somehow learned how to hold his rack way out in front of himself.
October 24, 2024 at 1:14 pm #2295721Small body or not unless I had 1000 acres I couldnt pass him up.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 22502October 24, 2024 at 1:14 pm #2295722Holy crap Randy that is an absolute stud! I hope someone else doesnt shoot it so you can get a chance at him when he is a real giant!

LMAO – it does look bigger in this pic. He was walking up to the camera. I just changed sd cards in it about 20 minutes before this. He smelled me
October 24, 2024 at 8:10 pm #2295785Blew it on the biggest buck I’ve seen in the last 18 years. Walked right out in the field – 34 yrds. Twice on the range finder 34.3yrds. Reached back to set my finder down and dropped it. He immediately pranced out to about 90 yrds, looked back and walked out of my life. Never seen this guy nor any trail pics. Massive 6×6 about 2-3” out side his ears and freakish tall. I’ve never mounted a whitetail. This one was THE ONE. Body wise, small elk. Probably 7-8 year old. Looked like gray hair from his chin to just above his brisket. Lord , I hope to see this one again. Even if it’s just watching graze the field. We don’t have the environment to get deer that old. That was something special

What are we talking 170″ or more ?
Are you shooting a bow or cross bow ?CaptainMuskyPosts: 22502October 24, 2024 at 8:44 pm #2295794Major bummer Randy! You still have a shot I hope you get it sounds like a stud even bigger than the pics you posted. You got this. Crap happens and I know you’re a guy that is so particular about everything but don’t beat yourself up you got this

I’m kidding. All I have is bad jokes.Hang in there Randy. Did he blow outta there? It’s the time of year when that buck will forget all about that little noise he heard if he smells or sees the right doe. I’m really hoping you get another chance at him.
October 24, 2024 at 10:38 pm #2295836I have to use a crossbow. 2019 crash tore up my shoulder, neck and lower back. Barely draw a bow back in pain and can’t hold it.
It was much bigger than the one above. I have a 191 non-typical 15pnt that would sit inside of this one. This was a very even looking 12pnt. Incredible mass and time length. I hate guessing size but high 180s or more I’m sure. Just dumb math 12×9” average + 22” inside + 26” beams = 194. The 9” average is very conservative. I bet the Gs and G3 were pushing 14”
I glassed him coming down a lane from my back field for about 10 minutes. He stepped into my tree planting and came out along side me and into my hay field. He hit my scent in the field and was cautiously walking. Stopped at 34. No way in heck I was guessing the distance. I really thought he was 45 or so. That’s why I hit it a second time. When my range finder hit the side of my seat, he was gone. No looking up and wondering. He immediately pranced off. Never threw the flag, so he wasn’t spooked to bad. Just knew it wasn’t right. Have no idea where is normal range is. Could be a one tine encounter or he may have moved in. I’ll leave this field alone for a couple days and see what happens. Regardless, that was an encounter of a lifetime. Would like to believe he is part of what I have been building with this farm over the last 35 years
Pics – lane I glassed him making a couple scrapes, trashing trees, and eating a crap loading acorns
Field is old pic. Hay/alfalfa this year. He came out this edge and walked right up behind oak tree in bottom right

October 25, 2024 at 3:35 am #2295845After last night’s rain I have 4 never seen before bucks on camera. All of them between 11 pm and 3 am.
Things are starting to shift. I’m sure glad mn pushed rifle back this year. Really hoping to get the kid a nice archery buck for himselfOctober 25, 2024 at 7:24 am #2295848Yea, three bucks last night on one of mine, all had noses to the ground. Should be a great next couple weeks.

I agree, with the warmth we’ve had and more still coming, I really was not wanting to sit in my stand when its 65 degrees out.
Next year it will be very early in the calendar cycle.

We were talking about this the other night. What exactly is it that determines the deer opener date again?
October 25, 2024 at 8:19 am #2295863Maybe because that’s just how the calendar works this year? If you look at the rest of the month, its always 2 weeks before Wisconsin’s opener and 3 weeks before Thanksgiving weekend. Thanksgiving is late this year in November.
Someone else may have a better answer here…
October 25, 2024 at 8:44 am #2295876Buddy scored his personal best buck this morning. Nice one. He finally came around on letting them grow. Passing a few smaller bucks enabled him to have more sits and was rewarded with this guy at under 15yrds quartered away. Congrats Tom

[/quote] i believe that its determined by the first saturday closest to the 6th of nov!!!!October 25, 2024 at 9:31 am #2295897That sounds possible Glenn. If that’s true, then I misspoke earlier. Next year it will be Nov 8 opener.

October 25, 2024 at 4:23 pm #2295979Good luck to everyone tonight. The girl decided we needed to go out for dinner tonight so I have to wait until morning. The farmer has been out fixing washout’s at one of the farms today, and he let me know two young bucks cruised down the edge of the field late this morning. I checked a few cameras last night, and there were a handful of fresh scrapes and rubs since I was out there last. I think it should really start getting good after what is hopefully the last warm up early next week.
