Unpacking and cleaning up gear after a 4 day ice trip in NE SD. A few notes below on some gear and my experiences.

Korkers: First trip with these boots and bought the icetrac sole. These were warm, dry, cleats were good but not overwhelming and could drive with them on, and boa system is great. Worth the cost and met the recommendations from me. My last two boots were baffins and clam sub zero.

Headlamps: With some input from folks on here and others I bought the Nitecore HC 65 UHE last eyar. Great light 2000 lumens with great flood and some throw. This year I added the Olight Perun 3. Another great light, 3000 lumens, similar with great flood and decent throw. I love that these both have the 18650 battery (i have two batteries for each unit) and that they handle the cold very well.

Baffin Boots: My son used some baffins and they did poorly in the slush and water on top of the ice. In the garbage already.

HD Innovations Shuttle, bag and carbon Pole: All are very nice, really like the rod clamps on the shuttle to help with storage and carrying, a few places on the pole take constant re-tightening. I have a message into Jason.

Liner on Bottom of Predator Bibs: 3 pairs of Striker Predator bibs and I still can’t figure out what/why/how these liner portion in the bottom works. These will be cut out after the bibs are washed tomorrow…just get in the way.

Modern Cabin: South Dakota built some of these in parks around the state. Not overly big, but much more cost effective than Airbnb’s. Very nice setups.

Hub Holes and LVS: Putting my LVS34 ducer in the middle of the hub allowed us to see 6 holes/lures on the screen in 28 and 24 feet of water.

Pawfly Aerator: Pic attached. Pawfly ultra quiet lithium rechargeable. Between $16-20 on amazon. This thing rand on intermediate for two full days and nights before needing a charge. Very impressed.

Target Walleye inspired lure mods: I posted some lure mods I did last year late ince and got to try a few. The buckshot with impulse minnow head and bladed treble was a beast. Caught fish everyday and caught my PB walleye.

Fishing: Good trip for quality fish. I put a 27 inch walleye on the ice and my son a 25.5. Both are ice personal bests for us. Great weather and decent numbers of fish. Fishing with the Livescope made a big difference, IMO. The 27 inch eye I caught came across the screen at 14ft deep in 30 FOW, I reeled up to it, it turned and smacked my lure. The 25.5 my son caught I watched come in from 16ft away, and I could make him aware to get in the shack as he was out messing with tip ups. Heavy to move around with these units though, not light.

Nice report. Which Baffins was your son using? I’ve had 2 pairs. The titans are great but they are absolute overkill unless put in -40 for extended periods of time.

Can’t remember the model of the others but they were an ankle high boot. Leaked like crazy. I needed shoe goo to seal them up.

I run baffin titans, they are the best. Water proof, warm, easy on/off. Had the baffin apex for a month or 2 but they leaked at every seam. Garbage.

You talking about the built in gaiter?

I agree on the Korkers. Love the interchangeable soles and boa laces. I’m of a certain age that bad things can happen if I slip and fall on the ice. The studded soles grip like crazy. The only downside is I have to put them on outside or I’ll wreck my wood deck. Lugs soles work great when there’s snow and those I can put on in the house.

These were an early version of the Baffin Tundra boot. Bought a few pair years ago on a sale and the kid fit into one of the sizes now, so we went with them. Maybe they’ve improved since, and have many lines, this is just one experience with one older piece3 of their lineup, so who knows.

No…on the boot/bottom portion of the bids, once I role over and snap the adjustable bottoms there is that poly liner. I’d guess the idea is for that to go into your boot but it just gets in the way for me.

They are built in leg gaiters.

Ahha…leg gaiter. Instantly thought of neck gaiter….makes sense now, thanks. Yea…I’m not a fan. I’m a slip the bids on, step into boots, and go guy.

On my old climate bibs, I just never buckled them.

Gaiters are invaluable in deep snow or for more active sports. But yeah I’ll agree they just get in the way for ice fishing 90% of the time, probably 99% for most people.

I’m glad some find my reviews useful and interesting. I regularly ask people on here for feedback and insight, as well as I enjoy researching things prior to a purchase. If I can share some information to reciprocate then I can feel good about doing my part.
