Can’t say I blame a player for preferring to take 10 days off and rest than play in a gimmicky tournament. I’m sure coaches and GMs would rather have them using that time off to recover and rest instead of further risking more injury. Even if they won’t say it publicly.
as more information comes out regarding the Avs/Canes trade, it just gets stranger and stranger…
Rantanen gave an interview this weekend and said the trade was a huge surprise to him and he told Avs management awhile ago that he was willing to take a “significantly lower AAV under what the market value said he should get to stay an Av” (around $14 million aav) Nathan MacKinnon also gave an interview and said he was completely blindsided by the trade and was never talked to about it beforehand…
It’s also kind of strange Mikko would say that when he’s now playing for another team and still needs to negotiate a new contract with somebody, now those teams know he was willing to take less…
So who do you believe?
I probably don’t believe any of them but it was clearly a move to build a team that is not as top heavy and add more depth and balance. Even though the cap is going up Mac Rat and Makar will tie up a significant amount of money. It’s not as if the GM and the agent didn’t have plenty extension talks leading up to this point. Crazy to think the last game Mac, Rat and Landeskog played together was the last game of the Stanley Cup in 2022.
It takes some big stones to let a guy like that leave.

yeah, but you gotta figure out how to keep future HOFers entering their prime right? Necas being the biggest piece coming back to the Avs will be a UFA after next season and he’s likely going to want $9+ aav, so would you rather have the proven Rantanen or Necas plus $1-2 million more capspace? again, this is assuming he was willing to take less than $14aav…
Now Toronto needs to trade Marner
No need, Tavares will sign a sweetheart cheap extension to retire a Leaf freeing up all the cap they need to extend Marner, he’s the straw that stirs the drink and has proven countless times he can carry the team by himself…The only thing that can throw a wrench into things is what Knies will ask for this offseason, but Toronto has other methods of incentivizing players to sign (local endorsement deals)

Don’t disagree just saying it seems as though the GM is taking the approach I mentioned.

I guess that depends on what they do with Necas, do they keep and extend him or trade him for picks and prospects? I wonder what Nate and Cale will think about waiting for Picks and Prospects? Maybe the younger Necas turns into a cheaper Rantanen 2.0, if so then Sakic is playing 4D chess…Rantanen owned the Wild so i’m happy…should be said that Carolina doesn’t have an extension with him yet so who knows what his future holds…risky move by the Canes…

Similar to what Kaprizov thinks I’m guessing.

Our prospect core (Boldy/Rossi/Faber/Wallstedt) is at the NHL (Buium and Yurov next year but likely way ahead of the learning curve) when Kirill is hitting his prime, not even close to the same for the Avs…who have one of the worst prospect pools with limited future picks…they do have a recent Cup though so there’s that argument…
Don’t think Colorado cares one bit about their prospect pool until Mackinnon is retired. Picks are really just trade assets for them
And I doubt there’s a superstar in the league who cares about any team’s prospect pool

agreed, but in order to get the good players you gotta find a team willing to trade them and then have picks and prospects that team wants…
seems like the smarter play would have been to pay what your future HOF was worth or if the report is correct, less than what he’s worth…
New Chicklets Podcast discussing the Rantanen trade, Pat Maroon interview, etc..
Starting to panic! Wild PR just tweeted out that BG will address the media regarding KK97 at 11.

OOOOFFF
That would be a good guess Gim. Core muscle like sports hernia or groin.
good thing that 1st round pick we traded for Jiricek is top 5 protected…
The Russo/Smith article says “sources” are telling them he likely needs groin surgery and would be out 6 weeks. Would be back prior to playoffs so they can’t Mark Stone him and won’t have any cap space at the deadline
I didnt see where they specified what type of surgery, but that is likely what it is. This lower/upper body business is ridiculous.

LOL you’re right I completely manifested that in my head – had to reread it just to make sure
*groin surgey is my assumption based on previous reports
NHL .500 hockey the rest of the season likely gets them into the playoffs. They’re .577 (7-5-1) without Kaprizov so far this season
surgery scheduled asap, not season ending, out a minimum 4 weeks…hopefully its a hernia and not a groin injury/repair…
That’s unfortunate. He was having an MVP caliber-type season.
Adapt and survive
I don’t even remember how he got injured? Does anybody know what happened?
Trade deadline is 5.5 weeks away and End of regular season is 11 weeks away. Give him the Mark Stone treatment, and pick up Brock Nelson or JT Miller or some other big name forward
In all seriousness there’s no chance Kaprizov is willing to sit on LTIR if he’s even close to game ready. Also no chance the teams asks him to do that 6 months before they hope to sign him for the rest of his life

it was never a “leave the game” injury, he likely felt a twitch during a game late December, told the trainers afterwards and they shut him down until he felt normal again, came back a few games ago and re-aggravated/injured it and now surgery is the best option…
