Skim ice on metro ponds, we could be drilling holes in 2-3 weeks!

I think next weekend is fairly likely on smaller stuff.

I think the shallow lakes may be ready by this weekend north of the metro if the wind stays down. Ponds have walkable ice after last night.

Well, the ice has just started to form on Shotley Brook. In the past it is typically 10-14 days later that the lake is frozen over. Of course temps and wind play a big factor on when we will have walkable ice. Sorry to all the people that now have to spend Thanksgiving with their families instead of ice fishing. We will keep you updated as to when we will open.

We typically head up Thanksgiving evening after a big early dinner. Now I’ll be hoping little locked up Ponds north of me instead.

More and more ice each morning.
Thanksgiving and Black Friday weekend fishing will be a NO GO this year. December 5th weekend is looking very likely, just have to wait and see what the wind and weather does as we all know it changes quick up here.

Lots of lakes around Brainerd have ice pushed far out from the shorelines. Lots of fog over the lakes this morning

The truck is loaded with softball to basketball sized rocks, and I’ll be hitting some local spots to do official ice checks starting Friday.

We are one step ahead of you. When you get to the lake and see rocks on the ice, youll know I was already there.

I am planning on ice fishing this weekend. I think a lot of lakes will lock up tonight now that the wind died down.

Most of the lakes on the game plan are pretty remote so hopefully they won’t be loaded with rocks that dumazzes tossed on the ice. moon

Is that where the guy went through in his Silverado 2500? Someone posted about that in another thread.

Even small lakes are not safe from the scientificly proven rock throwing ice depth/ sound check. I get around, and if I don’t make it bucky will.

Make sure those rocks are big enough to ding up a prop. If I was not going out muzzle loading it would be tempting to drive to Devils lake.

The little lake I live in northern mn locked up last night. I’m thinking Saturday it should be good to go. Possibly Friday.

    1. Rock Test
    2. If rock holds, go out and drill a few test holes in front of the launch
    3. If those holes look good, fire up the chainsaw to get your spearing hole cut
    4. Be sure to mark your spearing hole with garbage so nobody drives into it

Never forget doing a Thanksgiving timeframe roof by the access of Pearl Lake near Kimball one year. I swear every 20 minutes another vehicle showed up and threw their own rocks out. Hundreds of rocks on the ice after 3 days. Mind boggling. moon jester

We have 4-6 inches of good clear ice out 1 mile from our landing. We love the temps and the weather pattern we are seeing right now. As you can see in this satellite picture upper red lake is buttoned up and just about all of lower red is. We are planning to open for the season Monday at daylight for foot traffic. We will be stocked with bait and tackle. Our bar and restaurant will also open for the season on Monday. We will be updating our page and checking the ice daily to keep everyone informed and safe.
    Don’t forget your ice cleats.
4 and 6 person sleepers are available for rent on the shoreline at a discounted rate starting Wednesday. We do still have a few sleepers available this upcoming weekend on the shoreline as well. Please call to book your sleeper house today, if no answer leave a voicemail and we will call you back 320-290-3838.
For anyone wanting to bring their own wheelhouse or camper to enjoy some early ice fishing on upper red lake, there is no need to call. We have plenty of parking for everyone, just stop in at the resort when you get here and we will get you parked.

I found 4 inches on a lake in northern MN yesterday. I also found my first (and hopefully last) skunk of the year. Not the start to the season I was expecting. Heading out to try another little lake this morning.

Some bigger lakes in the area are still wide open.

In my area there has some guys out on the ice. It sounds like they are fishing on 3″ inches of ice. There was two groups out here on star last night.

Found 1-2” on Pool 4 backwaters yesterday here…nothing that I’d consider fishable except for the guys who sit on marina docks, but I’d bet today and tomorrow people will be starting to venture out.

With the sudden swing from 45+ degrees to 15 degrees, we noted a lot of birds still in the area congregating keeping pockets of water open.

Next weekend should offer some widespread walkable ice in the area.
