That cold front should be a great sit. Very excited for cooler temps.

Cooler weather will be nice. Especially with the new krytek vellus suit I just got. That will make the cooler weather feel great

Day number two behind the glass, and opener for us out of towners. We drove about 3 hours this morning to a new area after a tip from some residents we met last night. Hopefully this works out!

Sat on saturday night and sunday morning with no deer seen. Sunday’s 65 degree morning felt like a cooler compared to Saturdays sit. Will be back out with the better weather next weekend

Had my first chance yesterday. I glassed up a nice 3×3 and a big 4×4 about a mile away. I ended up getting busted by both bucks after sneaking into 22 yards.

My dad is in that spot this morning and I walked in a ways further to check out some new country. We’re consistently turning up bucks now so hopefully it’s only a matter of time.

How close were you trying to get ? My buddies just did the same thing out there. Both said they were busted at 20. Why not sit back at 30 or 40 and wait for the opportunity? Just curious ?

It all depends on the terrain. These two bucks were laying on a wide open wash out. Any direction I would have come from except the top would have left me exposed 80 yards out.

22 yards should have been a chip shot no? Were you not able to see them and that is how they busted you?

How bout snakes? do you have to watch out or is it late enuf they’re all denned up?
    Is a Crossbow legal?

Can’t wait to see the pics!
    Good luck!

Definitely a chip shot. The way I had to loop around on them I didn’t even know if they were there still. I popped my head up over the top as I was drawing back, and before I could react they were both up and heading over the next little ridge. I’m assuming they smelt of heard me.

Not sure about snakes. I don’t worry about them. I got over that in Montana when it seemed like they were everywhere. Its the dang cactus that seem to want to hurt you anyway! I’ve pulled quite a few thorns from my boots and shins already. Crossbows may be legal, we never looked into it.

We had a couple groups of hunters move into the area we’d been hunting, so we threw a hail Mary and moved to a new area for the last couple days. I walked a couple miles in to find this beautiful view!

That’s a beautiful view. I have to make time to do that the next couple years.

I think everyone should make time for trips like this. Going home with a deer is just a bonus at this point.

I can’t think of a better place to enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the sunrise!

I would agree, the views you’re getting are almost as good as flinging an arrow, maybe better.
    Nice looking country.
Are you on the Western side of SD? Black hills area?
    Mulies or Whitetails?

Looks like it could be challenging to sneak up on something out there.

    Still hoping you stick one!

Yeah western SD. Started out up north, and now we’re in the SW around the black hills. Stalking these deer could be tough, but the juniper choked draws we were hunting were just as challanging in their own way. There’s been a handful of failed stalks this week between my dad, brother, and myself.

My gosh thanks for the reminder. Been a way too busy year with my oldest starting school, an out of state family wedding, and plenty of yard/property chores. Was hoping to be more prepared at this point but of course I’m not. Anyway DT, thanks for that reminder!

Is it just me or does it seem to be always windy? I dont remember it always being windy like this years ago.

I was thinking the opposite. Everytime ive been out duck or deer hunting this year its been almost calm. Besides last night.

Saw three last night. Ended up seeing a pretty nice 3ish year old buck come out of a spot I shot a buck out of on the drive out. Going to give that a sit tonight.

I have not really paid attention that long. Only my real 4th season this year. I dont mind it though. Really helps cover your sound setting up.

Tomorrow should be a great day to sit, cold front settled in, some rain today so it should quiet down the woods, and a nice 5-10 mph wind. Personally I’ll take super windy over no wind, but hunting from the ground makes that a lot easier.
