Haha T! I am somewhat surprised by this trade but not really. Spurgeon must be about ready to come back as is Goligoski. The return isnt the greatest for sure, but they also got a player who I have never heard of so there is that.

The player we got was merely a throw in so the Sharks could get a contract slot back… We traded away $825k in an Arb elidgible RFA 3 years away from UFA status for a 5th round pick…ANY capspace is gold this season…

    Duhaime is probably next….

You don’t gain cap space by trading an $825k salary. If his roster replacement is Hunt then they actually lost $3k of cap space in the trade. Every D in Iowa has a higher NHL cap hit as well.

My point was we didn’t take any NHL salary back, we could scour NHL rosters for a Vet sub-$825k player or pool the $825k and perhaps another player traded (like a Duhaime at $1.1) and have almost $2 million to split between 2 players…

They obviously like Mermis better for the short term….

Looks like they did it for Bogo… who cleared waivers a month ago.

If they trot out a 3rd pairing of Bogo & Merrill I might get ptsd from the Pateryn/Seeler days. 3rd pair will be taking more penalties than breakout passes.

Weeks now reporting the Wild are trading for Zach Bogosian, there’s your gritty Vet D-man for $850k

The moves make sense for a team lacking defense and physicality from the backend, you hoped we could get more for Addy but it is what it is… I still expect them to trade Duhaime at some point (hopefully before he has another concussion, which I thought maybe he did last night)

GMBG will likely need to pay somebody to take Merrill and his extra year… maybe a young team like the Ducks or Sharks will bite..

Does this team really need a 3rd pair D who takes a lot of penalties and doesn’t kill penalties?

I sure hope he’s really a Merrill replacement and this allows Mermis to be a regular when Spurgeon is back.

About the only things I like about him are his size and his cup cred. That is about the extent of it.

Hopefully they can get cap space to to have brodin/Faber, mids/spurg, and mermis/Bogosian. Merrill and goose can ride the pine.
    Doubt it will work though.
More than likely they will need Merrill to get a phantom injury and go on ltir.

Waive Merrill and hope some claims him. If not send him to Iowa.

Did Faber ever run the PP for the gophers? Russo said the Wild want to try him out there….

I’d say just roll with 5 forwards until you get a few shorties scored on ya…

I don’t really remember Faber on the PP for the gophers but his game has completely evolved the last 2 years so he would be a great fit. He’s sound defensively like he has always been but now had offensive upside.

Merril makes 1.2 million so in iowa he will still be a cap hit. They could hope someone would claim him, but I don’t see that happening.

I think Merril is the 7th D short term and long term this season.
Defensively addition by subtraction with Addy.
Low cost 6th D move to get bigger and a little tougher in front of the net.
Addy basically lost his spot or reason to be on the team to a forward.

Merrill cap hit in Iowa would be like $50k so basically nothing

I think it was Jackson Lacomb running the Gophers PP

Trouble is, when everyone is healthy, they have something like 10 k in cap space.

that’s like 1/2 the league this year, once they get out of using LTIR they can start accruing again but it will be tight all season…

Duhaime and Merrill are really their only options for trades (I think they want to keep Dewar long term)

    I believe you are right.
Regarding Merrill, if the wild were to waive him, he clears waivers and is sent to Iowa his 1.2M does not count against the big club.

Do they need more cap space if everyone is healthy.

They save about $200k-$300k in cap by waiving Merrill and calling up any one of the guys in Iowa. I have no idea where you’re going with this.

On a different forum it was stated that players on a one way contract over 1.1 million, sent down after clearing waivers, do not come off the cap.
If I’m wrong, they should put Merrill on waivers, if I’m right they’re stuck with him.

Not trying to be disrespectful here but there’s no if… you are wrong, and I’m just trying to explain how it works

$1.15m of his $1.2m Cap Hit will come off the books if he’s sent to Iowa.

The amount of Cap Relief that a team gets from assigning a player to the AHL is the lesser of their Cap Hit and the NHL Minimum Salary + $375,000 (Buried Threshold). Therefore, if a player with a Cap Hit less than the Buried Threshold is sent down, their full Cap Hit no longer counts on the Team’s total cap hit. If a player has a Cap Hit greater than the Buried Threshold, if they are sent to AHL the team’s Cap Hit is the player Cap Hit – Buried Threshold.

    Then I stand corrected.
Hopefully the Wild send him down, because Mermis has definitely been out playing him and is cheaper.

    Totally agree.

In other news Scottsdale police released the footage of the Alex Galchenyuk incident from this summer. It’s somehow even worse than I was expecting my God that man has a mouth on him and the Belarusian accent just adds to it. Also seems to have some weird obsession with bolognese ???

In a shocking revelation, reports say alcohol may have been a factor in Galchenyuk’s behavior on the night in question. Along with being an entitled Belarusian pr!ck. With some kind of weird food fetish best described as Silence of the Lambs meets The Olive Garden.

In other news, Oilers put Superstar goalie Jack Campbell on waivers and to the surprise of the entire NHL world, he is expected to clear. At least we’re not the oilers sitting dead last in goals given up. Granted we’d better not have even one bad goaltending night or Edmonton will be saying at least we’re not the Wild…
