LTIR gets more of the best players into the playoffs and personally I’m a fan of that. I’m sure the league is too
it does, but its intention is as an injured player replacement. The issue is if the injured player comes back in the playoffs it’s then an unfair advantage to teams that didn’t have players injured enough in the regular season to “qualify” for LTIR and thus couldn’t take advantage of it…
I still haven’t heard a good explanation from the league on why a Salary cap is so important in the regular season, but not the playoffs? I know things get complicated with extended rosters, how to calculate cap compliance with technically the players not getting paid salary anymore, but who cares who’s practicing with the team, it should only matter who you suit up for games…(I get it that no salary cap in the playoffs benefits the NHL and Players) but it messes with the integrity of the game and the appearance of fairness imo…
and I know LTIR placement requires a team physician going on record with the player’s injury validation, but we’ve all heard stories by ex-players on how that’s manipulated (Jordan Tootoo chicklets interview is a recent example)
