This is a good reminder that football, as well as all sports and life in general, can have tragic accidents that seemingly come out of nowhere. Tonight reminds me of this story of MN high schooler Conner Erickson that happened this fall. Not sure if people heard of it or not, but my understanding is he was likely dead if they weren’t playing so close to Fargo and had a legit neurosurgeon ready to roll as soon as he got there. He’s back home now but his life will be forever changed. I actually ended up literally next door to Conner in the Fargo PICU the week after his injury and it was just brutal seeing his family every day while he was in a coma. Reminder to hug your kids and loved ones every chance you get.

Hope the young man recovers. Remember watching Dennis Byrd game in 1992 when he was paralyzed after colliding with a teammate. I was 10 but never forgot it. He later recovered but never returned to football.

Commotio Cortis. Blunt trauma to the chest that stuns/stops the heart.

Wow I had no idea this sort of thing could even happen. Even with pads on too.

The Raiders are a train wreck. What a gift to the 49ers, they will get rolled.

Thought that rookie QB Jared Stidham played really well against the niners on Sunday. He threw for almost 400 yards against a top defense. Not sure that he is the answer at QB there. Probably need a bigger sample size. I do think that Derek Carr is finished there though. He will be traded in the off season.

Based on all of the FB comments I see the packers are pretty much a favorite to win the SB now that they’ve finally beaten a team with a winning record lol

They’ve moved the Lions-Packers game to SNF. The opening line has the Packers favored by 4.5 points over the Lions.

In no way, shape, or form are the Lions a push over here. The problem is that the kitties not only need to win, but they also need help from the Rams to beat Seattle. They blew their chance last week when they lost to Carolina. Now they need to rely on someone else too.

And let’s just be honest here. The 7 seed is going to very likely play at San Fran in the wild card round. Good luck with that, whoever it is.

I hate to say it but neither the Packers or the winning team they beat are anywhere near the Favorite to win the SB. The Vikings are all over the place. You just never know what Vikings team are going to show up from week to week. I’ve said it all year, Their Def. backfield is just not good enough to get them anywhere in the playoffs. Now their Beat up OFF. line is also a big issue. I would not be surprised if both teams are 1 and done come playoff time.

Sure enough, Commotio Carditis. Blunt trauma to the heart at exactly the right (wrong) time.

I watched several of that Docs videos and he does a fantastic job of describing everything you are seeing. The earlier ones were around concussions with Tua and others.

Oh I agree, it was a sarcastic jab at many over confident packer fans. I don’t expect the vikes to go anywhere either.

    Sure enough, Commotio Carditis.

    Has that been confirmed, yet?

Same condition happened to Chris Pronger like 25 years ago after taking a slapshot to the chest. He collapsed on the ice but seems it must have been less severe as he had a pretty quick recovery.

I can’t see any of the possible 7th seeded NFC teams win in the playoffs. GB defense has played better lately but how long will that last and the offense isn’t what it was years ago. Detroit is decent on offense but the defense isn’t that good, and same same goes for Seattle. The only thing GB has going for them if they make it into the playoffs is their current winning streak. Sometimes the teams that get on a roll at the end of the season can be hard to beat. Didn’t the Pack and Giants both win their latest SB’s as a 7th seed riding a hot streak at the end of the season? The best teams to represent the NFC in the SB is probably Philly or Dallas maybe the 49’s because of their defense. So I believe it will be one of the AFC teams to win the SB again this year. But then anything can happen and you still have to play the game.

I kind of thought your comment was a sarcastic one. Sounds like we both agree that neither team is likely to go anywhere come playoff time. I hope I am wrong about this when it comes to the Vikings. I just have a hard time expecting much from them from what I’ve seen happen in some games this year. I do have to say its been one of the more fun years watching them overall. Other than the BLOWOUT losses to Dallas and this 2nd GB game that is. Those were both just painful to watch.

I doubt we will ever get 100% sure confirmation what exactly was the cause of the Cardiac Arrest. I’m sure there will bet lots of theories. None more certain than the others.

Just brutal to watch that hit, and the player reactions. Sounds like the guy was basically dead on the field until he was defibbed. Prayers for a speedy recovery.

Thanks for sharing that TSwoboda, I hadn’t heard about the Brainerd kid. Something similar happened to a kid from Alexandria that I tackled in middle school. It ended up he had some unknown issue with the density of the liquid around his brain, and he could never play contact sports again. Thankfully his injury was not nearly as traumatic and he’d gone on to live a full, sports free, life from what I understand.

As far as the playoffs go, I see the NFC as wide open and any team could make a run. Philly, Dallas, 49ers and MN (top 4 seeds) all look pretty flawed down the stretch, and have significant injury issues to overcome as well. And if this season has taught us anything, it’s the Any Given Sunday mantra.

None of you have heard of the old heart punch??

Several wrestlers finishing move but I remember Big John Studd using it. When my son showed me the video of the football hit I thought of blunt forced chest trauma right away.

I see the super bowl contenders as being 3 deep in each conference.

    AFC – Bills, Chiefs, Bengals.
NFC – Eagles (with Hurts), 49ers, Cowboys.

I personally don’t see the Vikings in that same group (even though they did beat the Bills). I think the super bowl odds will reflect this when the regular season is over too.

Agreed on the AFC, disagree on the NFC. NFC is wide open. Brock Purdy really going to manage his way to the SB? Cowboys barely beat the Minshew led Eagles, and lost to the Jaguars in the last 3 weeks. Eagles lost to the Saints, Cowboys and almost the Bears in the last 3 weeks, I don’t think Hurts makes that big of a difference, and they have some other significant injuries (Lane Johnson especially). Odds are one of those 3 make it out, but not by much and I’d probably bet the field if given some favorable odds.

I agree that the AFC is between the Chiefs, Bills, and Bengals. Right now I’d give them Chiefs a slight nod just due to having been there and Andy Reid.

I think the NFC is definitely more wide open. Hurts is going to have to play this week to avoid going nearly a month without football. The Cowboys seem like a contender and then out of nowhere Dak will throw the ball directly to the opposition. They barely beat Philly with their backup and have already lost to the Packers. The 49ers have weapons and a defensive front end that is historically good, but major qb questions. The Giants seem like a nice story but ultimately the weakest of the teams that will end up making the playoffs. The Vikings have to get O-Line healthy and look at defensive changes. Their offense is full of playmakers. It’s late in the season to schematically change things defensively, but if the Packers were able to embarrass them like that, others will as well. The Packers still need someone to step up in the receiving corps. Sure Watson has caught some deep balls, but he dropped another perfect one this week and Aaron Jones did as well. I also think their pass rush struggles against healthy teams. Without Gary there isn’t much of an edge presence.

Packers offense threw for 159 and ran for 163 (mostly with a comfortable lead) and scored 27 points against the Vikes with the help of 3 turnovers (not counting the 4th TO that was a pick 6). I do agree that the Pack need some WR’s to step up, Lazard is about the most reliable and he’s average at best. Watson, Tonyan and Doubs will need to go off for the Pack to do anything in the playoffs imo. Unless they start leaning on Jones and Dillon like they should have all year while the WR’s were figuring it out.

FWIW.. in the video, any doctor attempting to diagnose, who can rule out a cause, based on a slow motion video… should not be practicing. Period.

Exactly. He wasnt prescribing treatment or any medications, but stating an opinion based on being an expert in the field.

So, what do you do here? I am in the FFL finals and down by 5 with T Higgins and McPherson (Cincy kicker). When they stopped the game, I was down by 2.

I offered to split cash and give me the title. He offered to play week 18 and add points to week 17 (plus add average for Cincy players who didnt finish game, so I start with a 12 point lead). But he had Derrick Henry returning in a must win game and some of my top players might or might not play.

Make an agreement? Wait for commissioner to decide? What to do???
