Bigtime players show up in bigtime games… its gonna be a fun cup finals
Going to a a great series!
not gonna lie, I want this season over with so the Wild Offseason reckless speculation can officially kick off!
Russo has a perfectly time poll regarding speculation and thoughts this offseason. Im in the same boat Joe. I hope it ends in 4 games to get the rest of the shenanigans moving. Sounds like there has been interest on Fiala so that is good.
They really should shorten or shift the hockey season. It’s mid June, getting hot out. Full summer mode. Hockey should have wrapped up two weeks ago at least.
There seems to be more and more smoke around the Devils being the frontrunner for Fiala…
Realistic compensation from the Devils can really only be one or multiple choices of these 3 pieces:
1) The #2 overall pick in 2022
2) A top Prospect in the Devils system (Holtz, Hughes, Mercer)
3) The Devils 2023 1st round pick
Any of those options aren’t bad at all…I think only the #2 pick option probably requires an additional asset from the Wild going back to the Devils (I wouldn’t give up our #24 pick going, but I could see the 2nd round comp pick we got being that piece or maybe Talbot?)
So Filip Johansson, the one we drafted in first round in 2018 and opted to not sign awarding us a compensatory second round pick this year just played 9 playoff games. Had 5 goals and 2 assists. Hmmm. Just signed with VAN.
2) A top Prospect in the Devils system (Holtz, Hughes, Mercer)
3) The Devils 2023 1st round pick
Id be game for either of these. Ideally Id like a pick and prospect, but unless there is a bidding war and with multiple other potential FA’s out there I just dont see that happening.

My worry about getting the 2023 1st round pick is that it will assuredly have protection on it, and if the pick is ultimately protected and turns into a 2024 pick then the added value of getting a 1st round pick in the stacked 2023 draft is lost and we wait another year for our compensation as the Devils core gets better and the odds of that pick being in the back end of the 2024 1st round is alot higher…
This series has the potential to be the best SCF in the last decade, maybe more. Tampa could make history, or the Avalanche can establish themselves as a completely legitimate powerhouse.
Colorado has the potential to become the next dynasty, as their core (minus Mackinnon) is locked down for the long run. Could be a “passing the torch” type of scenario.
Really hope this one goes to 7.
I was half listening to KFAN while Russo was just on with Tenna B but he sure thinks that Dumba could be traded this offseason. He said don’t be surprised if a big shake up happens.

GMBG also has to talk up his asset’s trade values….with Fiala he can let his stats do the talking, with Dumba though he needs to build up his value anyway he can as he doesn’t have the stats to justify his $6 caphit…
Cup starts tonight. Who extends the streak… Corey Perry or Pat Maroon? I got Perry, but I’ve been wrong about pretty much everything in the playoffs so put your money on Tampa

Maroons mom said he will get 4 straight so I’ll go with that.
Colorado looks like it may be their time. No jitters, but that can change in elimination games. Not sure how Tampas older players are going to fair in the altitude. They are going to need to steal one in Colorado to have a chance I think. After watching the first period. Would like to see a little less officiating in the Stanley Cup Finals. Lightning are my home away from home team. But if I was betting money, I’d have to bet against them.

? They’re on the same team.
Yeah Maroon has the cup winning streak and Perry has a Stanley Cup losing streak – both with multiple teams. I’m just happy Tampa is finally playing a good team in the finals.
Game 1 has been very entertaining. It’s obvious that Colorado has the advantage on offense and puck control, but Tampa has the advantage in goal and with experience.
I know Tampa has a modern NHL ice arena, but it’s possible the ice there for games 3 and 4 could be in rough shape. The heat index in Florida right now is like 115.

And a goalie. Tough to be a dynasty when you have a FA goalie I can’t imagine they would be to pumped about giving money they won’t have for any kind of term. Also only have 6 forwards under contract next year and 3 the following. Agree there core is legit. Helps to have your best player only making 6ish mill right now however. Mac is about to get paid and Joe has some work to do the next couple years.
In addition to the cap issues mentioned this offseason, they have bigger ones next year when MacKinnon will close to double his aav caphit…They also have a young stud defenseman (Byram) with a serious concussion history issue…one more serious hit to the head and he could go the way of Pierre Marc Bouchard…They’ve also gutted their prospect pool so they will be heavily reliant on college free agents who can only sign a 1-2 year ELC contract moving forward…

Makar is going to get paid at some point in the near future too. He’s arguably the top player in his position right now.
Makar got locked up last summer on a very team friendly deal. Mackinnon will probably take a similar deal. The Avs will be fine in the future and they’ll be really dam good if they can ever find a consistent goalie. Sure their depth will probably take a hit but they just handled the champs while missing their point per game 2nd line center and their number 3 defenseman.

Didn’t realize that. I thought he was still on his rookie contract. Seems like not that long ago he was playing for UMass in the national championship against Duluth.

I don’t see any chance MacKinnon takes a “Team Friendly” deal…he’s been on one for the past 5 years…This is his only cash in contract, he’ll sign for 8 years at around $10-11aav…at the end of it he’ll be 37 years old and likely retire…
This is the same reason why Makar and Kaprizov signed the term they did, so their next contract starts right before they turn 30 years old…to cash in and maximize their 8 year extensions until they are 37-38 years old, after that if they are still relevant players (most likely) they can pick and choose cup contenders to play out their final years with…
Yeah I remember Makar hopping right into the playoffs and maybe being their best defenseman immediately. Just watching him skate those few games it was so obvious how good he is. That was the last normal playoffs before the bubble season and I think it counted as one of his ELC years so that’s why he’s already on a new contract. I agree it feels like that was last year.

And I think a lot of people would call that deal team friendly. Remember he gets put into the McDavid/Matthews conversation quite a bit – especially with how he produces in the playoffs. Makar took $9m and I think Mackinnon will be around the same, but not over $10m. He’s publicly said that he will take another cheapish deal because he wants to win a cup. So I guess it just depends on what we want to consider “team-friendly”.
The story with Makar is his agent asked Sakic for the same contract as Auston Matthews [$12×5]. Sakic said we need him to take a cheaper deal [$9×6] so we can keep other guys and win a cup. Cale said ok sounds good.
Mac will sign over $10aav, especially with the cap expected to jump $4-$5 in 2-3 years… McDavid and Mathews are on another level above MacKinnon, McDavid gets the top $ because he’s routinely 20-30 points ahead of everyone else, Mathews gets the 2nd top $ because he’s the leagues top goal scorer and plays in the largest hockey market in the world (Maple Leafs make 20x the money off Mathews name, then what they pay him)
If the Avs don’t win the cup this year then I think that could effect Mac’s asking price, but if he checks that off his list, then back up the Brinks truck…
Refer to my Makar/Kaprizov next contract before 30 comment regarding their agent’s strategy…
Let’s see if they win this cup first before we talk any dynasties. I’m still betting on Vasi over Kemps.
I don’t think Mac signs for less than 10. For the sole reason Mikko is at 9.25. Either way having a revolving goal tender situation will make it much more difficult than say a Tampa.

We agree there, I think this goes 7 for sure and Vasi is something like 12-0 in clinchers….
