So you’re saying that a General Manager up in a press box is sitting there making decisions on what player goes on the ice during the game? I don’t think so.

Lineup not when players go on the ice. Dean would certainly make the majority of in game line decisions, but calling up a player, sitting a player etc is ultimately the GM and as was said Boudreau commented he didnt have much voice on who was available to him.

Yes, I understand that. If a player has to be called up, there are financial ramifications involved that Guerin has to compile/approve of I’m sure.

I can tell you it wasn’t Bruce’s choice to move Parise down the line up and then eventually bench him.

We’re talking about lineup decisions, not which line starts the game or who goes out to start the PK. I’m saying GMBG is the ultimate decision maker on whether or not we see the nicked up guys (Zuccy, Greenway, Dumba) get extra rest or come back early to push for home-ice. Same goes for which goalie starts and who the healthy scratches are for game 1 of the playoffs. I’m sure they discuss it as a group, but ultimately if the GM is hard set on something that is what’s going to happen.

hah Would be tough for him to make that call from the NHL Network studio

    I don’t disagree with that.

We may honestly never know. Those are the sort of decisions that get made behind closed doors. It’s not like Dean is going to say “Talbot started game 1 because Billy told me he had to” when asked.

You’re confusing Lineup decisions with Icetime decisions…as I said, GM makes the decision on who suits up, coach makes the decision on how much icetime they get…in a good GM/Coach relationship they are on the same page, but there’s been several times when a GM puts a player on the bench, but the coach refuses to play him (Liane & DuBios are recent league examples)

He’s a charismatic dude who has the fanbase eating out of the palm of his hand. The people in the bar were chanting Billy at the end of it! I seriously think he could trade Fiala for Rask this summer and eventually talk us into believing it was a good move! There was about a dozen times during the podcast where I caught myself thinking “I wonder how this would go with Paul Fenton?” Because of his terrible personality he’ll always be remembered for Rask and Johansson but everyone will forget about him bringing in Fiala, Zuccy, and Boldy. (Edit: Hartman and Deano too!)

it’s nice to hear they have the next 3 years of capspace mapped out, obviously things can change…

I know it was always a long shot, but that tells me Fiala is 100% gone.

That’s why I brought up Boudreau…. none of us had a clue that Billy G made him scratch Hunt and Seeler or play Zucker on the 4th line. But when he outright says it a couple years later, we learn that the GM is controlling the lineup more than we realize. I suppose most of us won’t ever know 100% but they make it pretty obvious sometimes. Even Evason made it obvious he wanted Beckman on the team to start the season and was clamoring for Boldy/Rossi until they were finally called up.

Who do you think will start game 1 in goal, and do you think Guerin has already made that decision?

I think it is sort of interesting that Fleury gets the net tonight. That is 3 in a row for him. He hasnt looked fantastic so that is probably why. Game 1? No idea, but I am sure we will see them both in the playoffs regardless of how they are playing. One thing to think about is if Fleury doesnt win 4 games in the first two rounds that pick stays a 2nd rounder.

Fleury goes tonight, Cam Thursday, Fleury Friday, and that sets up Cam to start game 1. Said a week ago Talbot gets game 1 but will have a short leash. In the podcast GMBG said we’ll see both goalies in the playoffs.

I think so too. Ride him until he trips, if he trips.

Whichever goalie it is is up for a hell of a challenge. Blues are scoring 5 goals per game on like 15% shooting – pretty terrible stats for opposing goalies. Part luck but also part because of all their pre-shot movement, they’re passing the puck unreal right now.

will be interesting to see what Avs team shows up tonight against the Blues…would relieve alot of pressure if the Avs can beat the Blues and the Wild beat the Coyotes…having a 1 game cushion is everything with the final 2 against the Flames and Avs…then if they could also beat the Flames it allows a rest game for alot of guys…

The Avs have not been playing well down the stretch. The Wild and Blues have been on absolute fire though.

Well, since they’ve locked up the top seed, I’m guessing that they are sand bagging.

Yeah, but losing 4 in a row leading into the playoffs isnt ideal. It will be interesting, but they are still the team to beat out West.

Huge games tonight for home ice in the 1st round. If the Wild win and the Blues lose in regulation, Minnesota needs to get only one point over the last two games to lock in home ice. Saddle up everyone, it’s going to be a wild ride over the coming weeks!

They’ve also been resting a lot of their top players during those 4 games. I wouldn’t put much stock into it.

The wild have been without many of their best players due to injury and illness yet they’ve found a way.

Yes he does, should have had his 2nd if not for the penalty.
