Sure hope they can find their offense. That’s been the worst part of this.
A little (AKA “a lot”) more D and goaltending wouldn’t hurt. Edmontoning it by giving up 4-5 goals a game makes it a lot harder than it needs to be.
Bronwell: My 14-year-old daughter used his old sticks and his old elbow pads when he would get new ones. I’d just take his old stick home: “Ash, you got a new stick.” She’s like, “Ah, sick. I don’t have to cut it or anything.”
Some of the better quotes from the Athletic piece on Spurg….
I’ve taken my kids to Wild open practices when you could still do stuff like that. IMO, if you really want to appreciate how good Spurgeon is, you have to see him in person from ice level.
1. He’s absolutely tiny. I don’t believe he is my height 5’11”, even when he is wearing skates AND a helmet.
2. He’s absolutely as quick as a cat both in F and R. After practice, he was still on the ice when the Whitecaps womern’s team came on. He stayed on a little to skate with them and while he is very close to their size, he is easily twice as fast, probably faster yet. I look at him and the first impression is how did he not get crushed like a beer can in this league? It’s because nobody can get that close.
3. He’s the nicest guy. At practices, I don’t think the players are supposed to talk to the audience. He does all the time and he’s certainly a fan favorite, probably because it’s a little easier for the kids to identify with him.
Greenway is actually quite funny at practice as well. A lady was standing right at ice level and she said to the guy that was with her, “I don’t think Greenway’s shot is that hard.” He turns around and says, to her “We can still hear you. I mean we’re right HERE.”
So Spurgeon goes and gets some Wild person and they’re all on this lady’s case and they put her behind the glass dirctly behind the goal. Greenway starts cranking away with pucks right over the crossbar hitting the glass at head height and this lady sreams every time. It was really funny.
