I’m back at the cabin and went outside to pee and heard a deer scraping up a tree nearby. Ran inside and put on some clothes and grabbed gun. Went back out to creep up on it, scoping a bit every few steps, until I was close.

It was a tree that fell over in wind and now when wind hits it right the branches clack on a nearby tree lol

At least there was some excitement for a bit…

    Dandy bucks Deertracker and Jackfish.

Significantly less activity today compared to yesterday. Only saw 2 deer, one was a spike buck. Quit an hour early because of the rain.

I pushed around tonight in the rain, I kicked up 3 doe and stopped. I took a few more steps just to watch the buck I’m after to go crashing away from me. I had never seen him. He had to been following the does I spooked. I love the rain like tonight

We did that last night. Also made 28 lbs of ground ready for sausage now and 3 deer worth of steaks and straps.

Slower opener for me that ended with a bang the next morning. After pulling an all day sit and only seeing one yearling at around 11 AM, I was just ready to gather my stuff to head out for the evening when I turned around to see a large bodied deer heading through the bottoms attempting to come up the ridge I was sitting on. Wind was nowhere near my favor and he knew something was up as he stopped in his tracks at the base of the hill and would not come any closer. It was dark up to the point that I couldn’t get a good read on his rack size other than he was a few inches outside the ears and he was definitely a mature deer. After a 2 minute debate I decided to take the shot and was rewarded with what I thought was a good hit until I got down to investigate. No blood, no hair, no sign of the deer within the immediate area. Elected to back out, sit the morning then search for him the next day. Turns out he didn’t make it far and we found him piled up 50 yards from where I shot them without dropping a single speck of blood or or hair along the way which amazed me when I put a 265 grain slug through both lungs. He wasn’t as big rack wise as I thought he would be based on the body size but I’m still very happy with the end result as it turned out to be my heaviest buck to date at just over 200 pounds dressed. Being able to FaceTime the kids that morning laying alongside him was icing on the cake!

A lot of great deer gentlemen. Congrats! I took this year off, but tonight and tomorrow morning should be the time to be on stand with the big weather change coming tomorrow.

Slept in this morning. Should have been in the stand. Going to shower quick and head out for the afternoon. Will sit full days Thursday and Friday. Seeing lots of deer movement around the farm today without leaving the camper.

When I was in my stand on Sunday afternoon, a birch tree went down right behind me in that gusty 40 mph wind around 3pm. That was a sign it was time for me to leave.

TToday was my “should have been there yesterday” day. Had a target buck roll through 13 yards from one of my bow stands at 7:45 am, only does this morning!

Honestly I put a bad shot on a moving deer. It was shot on the other side. I also believe in taking quality photos. Back of truck photos drive me crazy. I also always clean them up before the picture.

The buck went 516 yards. It would have been a lot less but we jumped it a couple times. My instincts said stop but there was a ton of blood and I wanted to push it to keep it bleeding. Hindsight after jumping it the first time I should have came back the next morning. Luckily the wolves felt bad for me and left it alone.

I tagged a nice doe on opener afternoon with the black powder pistol. Standing weight was in the 140-150 range, definitely one of the larger does I’ve seen a while.

Trees are all drippy from the heavy mist, but I played a little hooky from work to hunt the afternoon. Leaves and branches are wet and quiet enough that even the elephant squirrels are silent!

Just walking in to the woods, stopped to think of all the chores I have at home, took a leak and looked over at this lady running at me. So I took her and now can only target my big buck. Puts more pressure on me for sure. But this hunt was 12 minutes long and I now have a different set of chores to do tonight now that it’s warm. Lady friend said she’s getting sick of deer hanging in the garage. This one will get butchered and ground immediately
