To those of you that had raspberry struggles this summer, have yours recently recovered? Mine are now loaded and pumping out berries (and no, this is not an everbearing variety). They’re DELICIOUS!

Picture of canning so far this year. Still got probably another 100 cups or better of tomatoes blanched, peeled, and in freezer to can in the in between season of hunting-ice fishing. Just found out today we won’t be participating in the fall baseball ball tournament. So there’s a weekend I get back. I’m emotionally torn about that though. I do love my days at the ball field watching my youngest play ball.

I would have all that canned goods on the floor. Too much weight for that shelf, would be sick seeing that busted on the floor.

The phone was in panoramic mode to get it all in. It fish eyes the picture slightly. But yeah. I did move some. We’ve got a ton more to do this fall when the weather turns crappy.

Broccoli is pretty hardy–I don’t think a potential frost this week will kill it. I forgot to order broccoli seeds this year and was stuck with whatever Menard’s had left. It didn’t work out for me, and I usually get too much broccoli. Oh well.

We pulled our carrots yesterday, and I’m pretty pleased with them. Time for some soups, pot roast, etc.

Our bell peppers are having a good year, too. I picked these yesterday, and all but one of them was off a single plant.

    Good morning to all-
Well, Fellers, down here on the Gulf Coast, my fall garden is looking good. Got collards, lots of broccoli, cauliflower planted and looking good. Very promising for late fall/winter harvest.

but this morning- bad news. those dread deer hoof marks in my garden. Nothing eaten yet, but that big old neighborhood doe knows what’s there now, so it won’t be long if I don’t do anything.
So I did something. I set my metal fence posts around t garden and used old worn-out fly line to make a barrier to my garden. then I tied on empty plastic Wal-Mart bags. for some reason, critters hate the sound and motion of plastic bags blowing in the wind. I do hope this will keep the deer out.

What do you fellers do to keep the deer out?

You all be safe and keep well- Ed

I live in central WI and we have the highest deer density in the state around here. My gardens have a three foot chicken wire fence around them. They’re both about 20′ x 12′. I grow a lot of tomatoes and peppers and stake up the indeterminates and cage the determinates. My guess is that a deer would probably hurt itself if it jumped into my garden so they don’t. I make sure not to plant things they eat close to the edges where they can lean over and eat the tops. It’s only been a couple seasons but I did have a doe and fawn spend late spring and early summer bedding in my yard or my neighbor’s and had no damage.

Ed is that hurricane coming your way? I see that it is pretty strong. Hope you fair well.

I have a 5 foot fence around my strawberry patch. They can jump into there. Last time one had trouble jumping out and wrecked a bunch of fence.

The house I bought in May has an enclosed raised garden bed in the back yard. I didn’t get around to using it this year, but I recently sprayed and pulled all the weeds out of it, and anything else that was growing in it. I also raked it and tried to level it the best I could. I’m planning to dump some leaves in there before winter for compost.

Anything else I can do to prep this thing for next spring? I noticed raking and leveling it that it was harder than concrete because of the lack of rain. Should I dump some water on it before winter? Add some topsoil to the top layer? Thanks

You could send a sample to the U for analysis. That would let you know if its grossly short of anything. Ive done that and it was immensely helpful back when I was learning about burning soil out.

Any still going? I’m debating covering tonight or just picking everything and calling it a successful summer.

Im done. Ill grab the few red tomatoes left. Hardly any green ones. I have froze more hot peppers than I will ever eat so the remainder will be wasted. I would like to eat a few more Anaheim’s. We have grown quite fond of those this year.

The Mrs. is pushing for either a large garden or a chicken coop at the new place. I really need to get ahead of the garden stuff before next Spring and will be reading up on everything I can find here…..because I do NOT want anything to do with chickens. Some of you have impressive results

Thanks to this post I just went out and did it. Here’s a pic.
The ghost peppers are so pretty yet so useless for me. I get so little use out of them and never when they are ripe.

Yeah, I would never have anything to do with them. I’ve grown one Fresno pepper plant the past couple of years, and that is more than enough hot peppers for me.

I grew a cayenne plant one year and had an obscene amount of them. I dried and crushed most of them, and it took me at least 5 years to go through them all.

I sent the kids up to check on things yesterday. They picked a few bell peppers and then each ate one like an apple. rotflol

I eat bell peppers like that all the time!!👍👍

My garden has been done for 2 weeks. After the supposed freeze tonight I’ll be cutting off all the hostas and flowers….. Freeze or not.

But later this afternoon there will be a fire and 🍺🍻

Here in Cold Spring at 5 am it was 29 degrees and the grass is frosty this morning. And just like that my black walnut tree is dropping leaves pretty good.
