Yes but I have also heard the talking heads that he would like to go to the Blues. Either way he had his best year finally on the same line as Johnny Hockey. Guessing that may have played a part as well.

Blues would need to clear $9+ million in capspace and I dont think they have the prospects and trade-able players (besides Kyrou) to make a deal happen…. I could see Anaheim being interested and they have the capspace and prospects…. It will be interesting to see what the Flames can get in return as he could just play out this season at like $9 million and then walk to free agency…. Tough offseason to be a Flames fan…

Pretty good article about Minnesota’s chances of “tanking” next season to snag a top draft pick if Kaprisov cannot return.

    Can A Kaprizov-less Wild Execute A One-Year Tank?

The Blues just signed Thomas to a big deal. Swapping the two would work I would think. How about Vegas still being over the cap as we sit? I just hope more teams take advantage of their Cap issues.

I didn’t even think of that, yeah that and some picks & prospects (Snuggerud?) could make the deal work…

Gaudreau and Tkachuk have one thing in common they are both U.S. players with family in the states. I would venture a guess that uncertain travel restrictions back and forth across the border played a factor in these two deciding to leave Canada.

Auston Matthews is the next big name, he’s going to walk away from Toronto in 2 years. Canadian teams are going to start treating US kids like Russian kids at the draft jester

That’s including Shea Weber’s $7.8m against the cap. They have $6.5m space but still need their RFA’s Hague, Kolesar, and Roy

I wonder what Matthews would think about going to Arizona. By the time his contract is up, they should have the new arena situation more down the path of completion and perhaps they could actually contend and him being there would certainly help that scenario. Its too bad all those Blue Haired snow birds dont get to see a good hockey team.

Yeah I feel Gaudreau and Tkachuk leaving Calgary is not a slap against the Flames and or coach Suter as much as it is against Canadian governments reactions to the pandemic and the still ongoing travel restrictions. And it would seem they are gearing up for another round of it with the Monkeypox gaining traction as well. Makes it difficult to see any extended family from the states.

I’m not saying this is the deciding factor but no other reason has been given as to why these guys want to leave and no one will say the quiet part out loud. If you are from the U.S. planting your flag in Canada for the next 7 or 8 years is a heavy weight decision to make.

If these hockey guys started saying that as one of the reasons or main reasons, there would be mutiny! Sure they had the truckers and a few other things, but if it’s messing with hockey, that’s something no Canadian can stand for. lol

The last 2 years have been an absolute mess for professional athletes with their seasons shortened, placed in a bubble with no family for weeks and then add in all the travel issues going to Canada. I can’t say I feel too sorry for them considering they get paid handsomely to play a kid’s game, but these younger players it has to weigh on them if they cannot see their families or they come to games easily. Gaudreau has been a momma’s boy since back when he was in college. Not surprised he wanted to be back closer to home especially with his wife and her career providing her more opportunities too. It will be interesting to see what happens with Tkatcuk. His arbitration hearing was set for Aug 11th which is the last possible date. I would highly doubt he is still with the team by that date.

Are Russo and LaPanta having an affair? Never see one without the other and now they seem to be on a European vacation together with no signs of LaPanta’s wife. Asking for a friend! whistling

Gotta get to 300 plus pages somehow! grin

I would think the Blues would love to get Tkachuk. His dad has been one of the driving forces of youth hockey and development of players in St Louis making it to the NHL. In 2015, 5 players in the first round of the draft were from St Louis. With help from Al MacInnis, Chris Pronger, Kelly Chase and other Blues players that have been involved. Think homegrown players can be a fan favorite. Like Eddie Olczyk in Chicago. Sad to see him leave.

If Tkachuk wants to go to St Louis so bad and if i’m the Blues GM, I dont offer much if anything for him as all they need to do is wait 1 season and sign him as a free agent with zero assets lost…They also have tons of salary (Teraseko & O’Reilly) coming off the books after this season. If a trade did happen, Calgary will likely be forced to take back Krug to help it work moneywise and St Louis would love to dump him…

If the return is minimal, it makes GMBG’s return for Fiala look alot more impressive. The caphit only for 1 side also made it alot more complicated as well…

What does? He hasn’t been traded yet, so that remains to be seen.

Is there anything in the off-season changes with the Wild that hint at the power play being better this season?

In the Athletic they have a deal where fans can suggest nhl rule changes. My submission in the comments was that like in football, a team should be able to decline a penalty. I signed it MN Wild Fan and got a lot comments that for the Wild that would make total sense.

It was 2016 and that was an all time draft for US kids in general. Already produced a Hart and Norris trophy in only 6 seasons.

Calen Addison being on the team and given the reigns on PP1 – no offense to Spurgy.
Boldy being on PP1 full time – Fiala was really bad on the PP last 2 years and I think a big culprit of PP1 struggling.
    Rossi potentially helping out PP2.

I thought Tkachuk listed at least 7 teams he would sign long term with? He should get a trade return similar to Jack Eichel. But yeah it’s great Fiala got traded early in the offseason – imagine trying to move him now after DeBrincat, Gaudreau, and Tkachuk were all on the market.

I tend to think Tkachuk might get more than Eichel considering he has no significant injury history. It will be interesting for sure to see where he ends up. Some Wild rubes posted a podcast the other day about the Wild being a darkhorse to land him. I guess what ever it takes to fill the void until the season starts. That’s their way of trying to get to 365 pages I guess.

I don’t think it has much, if anything, to do with the Canadian government’s reaction to COVID.

    Calgary has:
    – An old school “my way or the highway” coach in Sutter.

    – An ancient (by NHL standards) arena. I believe it was built in the early 1980s and even the last major renovations weren’t even done in this century, it was sometime in the 1990s. Compared to newer “hockey first” arenas, it’s really bad and obviously, the players will make that comparison because they get to see all kinds of arenas.

    – Calgary is…ummm… Calgary. Like any other city trying to attract employees, there are going to be some that love it, but it’s butt cold, relatively small, and compared to a lot of other hockey markets it’s easy to see that some won’t see it as a top tier destination.

And all this is outside of what is probably the biggest factor for a lot of top players.

The hyper-scrutiny of hockey and hockey players in Canada is off the charts. It’s way beyond being under a microscope, that old cliche was true back before social media, but now it’s like being in a hothouse, under a microscope while being boiled in oil. If you drink wrong from your water bottle while playing for a Canadian team there’s a soc campaign to have you flogged in the public square at noon the next day.

There isn’t any way to really compare it to the US so most don’t really consider that playing in Canada is any different, but anyone who’s played there will tell you it’s WAY different.

^^^Disagree – those guys wanted out of Canada ASAP. Canadian teams are on every no trade list and that wasn’t the case 3 years ago.

Sorry I didn’t spell it out… covid regulations and being on the wrong side of the border was a major factor. That’s currently driving more US players out of Canadian markets.

    Laine 4×8.7 extension for CBJ

Seams like a fair deal. He should have some opportunities to put the puck in the net. Maybe he gets back 35-40g player if he doesn’t, not committed super long to him.

Laine is an enigma, I can’t decide if he helps or hurts a team, but not many can score like him.

His trade partner PLD accepted his QO to walk to UFA next summer. Expect him to be on the trade market this season.

Wow! Calgary did a great job getting all that value in the trade with Florida! Not sure they will be able to resign Huberdeau and Weeger next year though…

Calgary will have more than enough money to try and sign both. Their highest paid skater is Backlund at 5.3 and Markstrom is at 6. Lucic is gone next year. Whether they do or not is a different question.

I don’t know if you win a trade and lose Tkachuk at the same time. As BG says you don’t want to be here no problem. Right. Losing these two will change that franchise forever.

Florida won’t have a 1st round draft pick for 4 years in a row!
