I would be interested in seeing where they would rank without Wallstedt at 1 is what I was getting at. Not as if these rankings mean all that much but All Star break type topics.

I think it would probably be a bit lower, but probably not that much. I mean they still would have picked someone there so unless they absolutely blew the pick Id imagine it would still be high.

Picked someone yes, but most likely not in the top of the chart like he is and not likely the number 1 prospect at his position. So I think it definitely pushes up the overall ranking a decent amount.

Good chance they pick Lambos still at that spot and in Joes rankings he is 5th.

Im not sure they would have gone after Lambos at that spot I mean Lysell was taking one pick after him and he is pretty highly regarded I believe and he is a Right shot guy. He’s Boston’s #1 guy, but their’s ranks 30th so that isnt saying much.

Ooof Lysell was just benched in the AHL and had 0 points in the World juniors.

Hindsight I get it. Just think it would be interesting to see the ranking.

Just talked to Judd and he said they were going Wyatt Johnston if Edmonton took Wallstedt. Johnston has 13 more NHL goals than Rossi even though he’s a year and a half younger. Unfortunately he wouldn’t count toward the prospects ranking because he’s a full time NHLer, so we don’t want him anyway.

I never said HOF, I just listed some names of goalies off the top of my head that were drafted by the team they ended up playing 10+ seasons with…

Yeah Exactly. I’m not expecting Rossi to be great either, just a solid Marti St. Louis or Theo Fleury type, ya know.

Lambos can score and look good in Junior playing on a talent loaded team, but he’s had a rough time playing against elite talent at the WJC’s. The thing is he’s good enough to make the Canada WJC team, so he has the talent/tools. He’s also still very young and his ELC can slide to start next year when he plays in Iowa. He’s a great trade chip if needed, but they can afford to be patient with him…

Peart is sort of the same player, they both have had bad/not great WJC tournaments that opened the door for criticism on their development.

They are also part of the covid development years, so perhaps they just need a little more time? They’ll need to make a decision on Peart next year or risk losing him as a college free agent in 2 years…

Another win for Wallstedt tonight against the 1st place team, that’s 8 in a row… all 3 goals he gave up were Powerplay goals.

Do you guys finally beleive me when I said Russo is grooming/introducing Joe Smith to this market to replace him by the end of the season?

I think once that announcement was made we all sortof thought the writing was on the wall. There isnt another market that has two Athletic writers heck some dont even have one (NJ). I am not happy about it but Joe is pretty dang good IMO.

I like Joe’s style, but he needs to cut the cord with all the Lightning references…You write for the Wild now…

I know that irks me too, but I dont think they have a beat writer anymore so I kind of get it sometimes.

Was there an announcement? Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, Chicago, maybe more – all have multiple hockey writers for The Athletic.

As long as Russo is writing about hockey he’ll be plugged into the Wild so I like that he’s in more of a national role. He does one of the national podcasts and he’s non-stop making Wild references.

Joe Smith has been good… Nice change-up from the Russo roller coaster where every gamer is either the team is winning the cup or the worst in the league.

No announcement, just a vibe…there’s just an awkwardness when they discuss thier roles, Russo bascially just tweet’s Smith’s story links, Russo getting more and more involved in National stuff, I just get the feeling he’s out after this year and becomes just a National columnist and becomes the Face of the Athletic’s NHL coverage and gets on shows like TSN/HNIC as that head piece…I’d be sick of covering the same team for the number of years he has…

Like rip the bandaid off done with the Wild after this year? No chance.

They’re doing exactly what they said… Smith being the Wild beat writer and Russo doing a combo of Wild and National. I’m not sure what ya’ll were expecting?? Russo’s done dozens of Wild articles this season, he’ll probably do less next season but he still has tons of relationships and connections with the Wild. Yeah he’s not doing nightly gamers and live tweeting every game but he’s not going cold turkey on the Wild either.

So Rossi is doing well in Iowa? 26 points in 25 games or something? Big step up to NHL but still good to hear.

No idea why KK is on the fastest skater. Hes not slow, but hardly fast Id say.

They need to get back to the original format of showing the base skillsets imo (Cone skating, stick handling, passing/shooting, fastest skater, accuracy shooting, hardest shot, shoot out relay)…I get that they are aiming for a younger demographic, but some of these events are just silly. I do like the idea of them dedicating 1 event to align with the host city theme though, last year’s Vegas card shooting game was cool and this year they have something setup on the beach shooting into the ocean…i’m sure alot of fans (especially the youngest ones) want to see a shootout trick shot event, but the success % on those shots are so low that it makes for terrible TV when the player repeatedly fails at their attempt and they get no score…

I think its ridiculous that KK isnt doing the sharpshooter events. He has total sniper all over him. Every goal is like a snipe shot. I too like the “area specific” events like they did in Vegas last year. Its interesting, but they need the traditional fastest skater, hardest shot, sharp shooter etc. The shootout thing is kinda lame especially when the best ones rarely win and they give it to the local guy.

Does anyone actually watch the AS Game or Skills Comp? Just saw Horvat is playing for the Pacific and wearing an Islanders sweater jester

Caps extend Dylan Strome at $5m x 5. I will always wonder why the rebuilding Blackhawks simply let him walk away for nothing.

Yeah I do. I watch all of it. The game itself isnt that entertaining kinda like the Pro Bowl. Id rather watch skill competitions over the games themselves.

I still do for the possibility of seeing something cool happen (Zegras’s trick shot was incredible last year even thogh we don’t know how much stick wax he had on his blade) but I’ll admit it’s kinda stale… but you can say that about the Dunk Contest, Pro Bowl, HR Derby, etc… There’s just so much worry about players getting hurt that it’s just a bad interpretation of the actual sport being played… at least 3-3 gets them skating more now…it also feels like the modern player Agent/Marketing Team is against anything negative possibly happening and thus trending negatively for their client. I’m convinced this is why players like LeBron James won’t do the dunk contest, they can’t afford to lose it to some “lesser” player and then take heat for it afterwards…

oh to remember the days of Charlie Hustle plowing through catcher Ray Fosse to win the 1970 MLB All-star game…can you imagine if that happend in a modern allstar game?

I don’t remember when it was in St Paul, but I was offered a ticket to the All Star game and took up the offer. It was nothing but attempted highlight reel plays, very little goal tending, and no defense. The final score was 8-7 if I remember correctly.

I’d never pay to attend it myself, and I’d never watch it on TV either. If I had to pick one, I’d definitely rather watch the skills than the game. But even the skills competition is bush league too.

Out of the four major sports, the MLB derby or the MLB all star game is probably the most entertaining. But even the MLB all star game doesn’t have the appeal it once did when they took away the winner as being the host for the world series. When that was a provision, it at least meant something.
