Now the interesting thing is the lack of supporting depth around them. You can argue McDavid’s caphit hurts the team a bit as he’s paid anywhere from $2-$4 million more than the star player on any team not named the Maple Leafs, so that replaces one good 2nd/3rd line winger you could have with instead a rookie or vet on a minimum contract. That’s hardly a substantial loss though vs what McDavid produces…I think it’s more to do with bad drafting (all those years of taking offense with their top pick neglecting the defense) questionable FA signings and never investing in a good goalie…with the speed McDavid plays at he’s always in a vulnerable position and he’s already had an experimental knee surgery under his belt, at some point he’s going to get fed up in Edmonton, in 5 years it will be a bidding war to sell him on your franchises chances of winning a cup.
Edmonton’s issues are perfect exemplified by Darnelle Nurse taking a 5 minute shift in overtime last night. He wasn’t caught out there on icings and D-zone time, there were whistles and he had chances to change. They just have ZERO. DEPTH. They have 2 superstars, a good forward, a good D, and a powerplay specialist. The other 15 guys are garbage. The superstar powerplay carries them to the playoffs where refs put the whistle away and then it’s season over.
How about Granlund to Kunin X2 to even the series last night. Is Granlund playing center full time in Nashville? Seems like every recently former Wild player is in the playoffs this year.
