If you’re still dealing with the powdery mildew, you can try this. Mix 1 tablespoon baking soda with 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and 1 teaspoon dish soap in 1 gallon of water. I’d spray a few leaves in the morning and check the plant the next day to make sure it’s doing OK, then spray down the rest if it is.
I don’t have a fix for the beetles but if you’re using traps I’d get rid of them because it seems they actually attract them. Thankfully I don’t have any. “Studies have shown that traps lead to more plant damage in the areas they are placed in. One study found that a trap placed alone led to nearby vegetation having more damage than in similar areas where no traps were placed.”

Thanks. I’ll give the treatment a try.

I’ve been spraying the beetles with 4 tablespoons of Dawn dish soap in a quart of water. I’d like to think it’s working but most likely hasn’t. They just keep coming. At first I was having fun with my salt gun and picking them off one at a time. Then they called in reinforcements and I feel like Custer getting over run. I’ve heard the traps are a bad idea. My neighbors must have them. mad

You’re killing me glenn. Mad respect to the perfect amount of mayo on that BLT you posted. If you tell me it was Miracle Whip, we can never be friends.

I was about to post here that I saw a video yesterday about planting sacrificial varieties to attract pests away from the good stuff. He said to plant Hubbard squash to keep squash bugs and vine borers away from the rest because they’re more attracted to them. I found an Asian beetle on a cucumber leaf last week. Today I noticed a bunch of holes in the wild grapes about 15′ away from my cukes and two beetles engaged in the dirty deed that I killed. Made me think the grapes might be keeping them away from my cucumbers as I’ve had no sign of pest damage on them at all.

For those of you that are canning, where are you finding the flats/lids?

I just started canning this year and haven’t had a hard time finding jars, but lids and rings have been skimpy or non-existent at Fleet Farm, Walmart, Tractor Supply and even my local family owned grocery store. Amazon seems to have plenty of the Chinese crap I’ve heard bad things about but Ball/Kerr lids are too expensive. Hopefully, it will be better next year when I need them. I’ll keep an eye on this in case someone can point us in the right direction because I’d prefer to buy before I need them.

Say it ain’t so glenn! Why does a sandwich need sugar on it? Miracle Whip hurts my molars like it’s candy. I might have to block you but I’d probably have a hard time getting those onion sets from you this fall. To each his own I guess. I like to eat sushi, tongue and heart so I know what it’s like to be the weirdo. razz

I just ordered some from Amazon too,120 lids for $18.04 and no charge for shipping. .15cents per lid.
    Regular canning lids
I should see them on this Sunday.

Until this year I’ve never ever used a flat that wasn’t Kerr/Ball! Last year all I found was a Walley World branded flat and got 3 boxes of 12 just to be safe. I bought a box of Kerr/Ball lids with rings that were inflated price but wth at least I’ve got something to can maders with.

So will see how these work.

Please let us know how it works out Denny. I’ve heard there were many off brands that wouldn’t seal on the first go last year and it made me avoid them since I’m just getting into it. Hopefully it was overblown.

naw. waytogo I’ll send them to ya. No issues here. Basically it’s what I grew up with. Tried that other stuff. doah can’t do it.

As far as the lids Yea I would go with Kerr or ball and pay whatever, as it is a proven product but at this point beggers can’t be chosen, we shall see.

Ever try making your own mayo? You seem to be a pretty good cook. Do you like eggs? Add a little squeeze of lemon juice to some egg yolks and oil, a pinch of salt and that’s mayo.

Made 6 quarts of pickles yesterday using glenn57’s brine recipe and added a jalapeno from the garden to each. The pepper is a pretty spicy variety called jalafuego. Definitely hotter than any other jalapeno I’ve had.
Got some washed and cut green beans from my wife’s coworker. Her husband works in QC at Del Monte. Ended up with 7 pints of dilly beans since I had that much of glenn’s brine recipe left and 3 pints of plain ones. Used my 10qt pressure cooker for the beans water bathed the pickles.

Edit: Looks like I attached the same pic twice. Oops.

Jealous. I love sweet corn. My plants blew over in the storms but seem to be coming back up on there own as we were gone this last week.

Picked about 80 dozen sweetcorn fri/sat froze a bunch for my parents and ourselves. Wish it would have been ready a week sooner there was like 6 people selling it in our small town this weekend. Still sold enough to get seed and fertilizer money covered.

anyone else that gardens and has tomatoes with the tomato wilt……

Im thinking the problem im having with my tomatoes really might not be a problem. The only plants that are doing it are romas which are determinate so im thinking they are just reaching their life cycle.
