Is it legal to take the rack?
Legally I would have to call the game warden first.

I seen one of them as well. I also sadly sadly missed a buck from a shorter shot. After my grandpas 30 06 scope went bad I decided to take a untested and un tried 270. I sighted it in. But today I missed 2 shots. Not 1 but 2. I never miss and I never track. It makes me feel very un easy about the rifle. 1 shot and its me 2 and I think I have issues with the gun
deertrackerPosts: 9237November 14, 2020 at 9:15 pm #1987979I’m opposite of you this week Bearcat. Found how crazy accurate two of my rifles are. Shot a doe with my kids .270 at like 324 and a coyote with my other son’s 30.06 at 233. Sucks you are struggling.
DTNovember 14, 2020 at 9:17 pm #1987980I would agree Bearcat. Last year my brother was using a scope on his gun and missed on a deer. He couldn’t believe it. After the morning hunt he went home, target shot and found out it was off 8″ (he had previously sighted it in). He no longer trusted the scope to stay sighted in so he just took it off (shotgun with rifled barrel). He got a deer that evening. Lol

November 14, 2020 at 10:17 pm #1987991Bearcat, I didn’t miss today. I couldn’t shoot at the 3 does 25 feet away smiling at me, cause I was sitting on a log, with my pants to my ankles, taking a dump. Gun just out of reach.
So, there is that.

I had two unfilled tags leading up to yesterday mornings hunt. Hadnt even taken a shot during the season yet, had been very slow, only see a handful of real young deer. Threw a rifle scope on my shotgun the day before the season began and got it sighted in appropriately. Right away yesterday morning I had a doe at about 35-40 yards. Shot, and based on her reaction as she staggered into brush I was very confident she didnt go far. About 5 minutes later, before I got out of my blind to retrieve the doe, I saw another doe and a small buck on a field edge behind me. Figured if im gutting and deboning one deer I might as well fill the 2nd tag then too. After quietly stalking 30 yards I glance back behind me and sure enough, big ole buck standing looking at me riiiiiight in front of my blind. Within feet of where I just shot the doe. I kneel down and get in shooting position but he doesnt flinch after 3 shots and eventually jogs off.
I could have swore my scope was way off and I never got close. Must have missed that doe too.
Nope. Made the perfect shot on the doe. She didnt make it 20 yards. Just somehow missed the buck. Then, I was able to circle back and make a 2nd play on the buck. Took 3 more shots that were even closer and miss, miss, miss again.
Im at a loss for words. Never claimed to be a good shot but I know I’m not THAT bad. Especially after making the perfect shot on the doe. My dad thinks I was so excited to see the buck go down that I was not focusing on the shot, glancing up too early, and missing high with every shot.
I think I’ll just stick to fishing… until next November that is

Are you saying my .143 weighted kills per shot rate is below average??November 15, 2020 at 9:33 am #1988029Got this ten yesterday morning. Fun having my son help me find it. Longest shot taken at close to 170 yards with 20 gauge. Clipped both front shoulders and bottom of heart.
Saw a lot of deer moving but the size of this bucks body was impressiveAttachments:

Are you saying my .143 weighted kills per shot rate is below average??Hahahahaha! I had a buddy do the same thing TBro, shot a doe at 40 yards then miss subsequent deer 5 times. Including a big buck. His theory was the first shot knocked his new scope loose, and thus off. I think buck fever, especially since he never confirmed if his scope was loose or off since….

November 15, 2020 at 11:32 am #1988077Are you guys that miss deer shooting your gun before the season every year at the range? I’ve done this every year for as long as I can remember to ensure accuracy when the moment arrives. Don’t just assume that it’s on target every season, ensure it at the range. It should only take 1 shot to confirm anyways.
The neighbor said he missed the buck standing still at 80 yards on opening day that I shot 4 days later. All I can do is wonder why.

Sighted in right before the season. Went through 20 shots to make sure it was exactly how I wanted it. Made a perfect shot on a doe but missed the buck 10 minutes later while in a more difficult shooting position and slightly further distance. Still should have been a dead deer though. I think bigwerm was right, I got buck fever!
Wouldn’t mind the shotgun zone becoming a rifle zone in the upcoming years either
deertrackerPosts: 9237November 15, 2020 at 4:29 pm #1988131Went back to grandpas 30 06. Iron sights. Had to salvage my season. The smaller one didn’t want to leave so I felt bad and took him as a mercy kill.
Walking in to my stand at noon they were just hanging out. I hunted for 4 minutes today.Attachments:

November 15, 2020 at 10:05 pm #1988190Good job everybody on the harvests’! Especially the first timers. I capped off the firearms season with more meat. As my wife told me it sure would be nice if you didn’t just hunt for antlers! Well I had a choice of a small buck, or 2 does that both had triplets. I didn’t want to shoot a doe that’s supplying is with so many fawns. So I used the bino’s to find a doe fawn from the bunch. By the time I picked my target they were around 170 yards out. Practice pays off, with 1 shot from the 270 I made the wife happy. Now back to the bow till Dec 31st!

tbro16InactiveSt PaulPosts: 1170November 16, 2020 at 11:55 am #1988301All in all a pretty good season for my party. Buddy got a nice buck on the ground on opening day. It was his first ever deer and first time hunting on my families property. He actually slept through his alarm opening morning (lol), showed up at about noon, saw a big buck from a few hundred yards away, and was able to make a great stalk on it and get it down.
The doe pictured was a moderate at best consolation prize for what my Saturday morning could have been. Oh well. I’ve got meat in the freezer and hopefully an ever bigger buck to shoot next year!

November 16, 2020 at 3:32 pm #1988388Great deer everyone! It sure feels good to be back on the farm now that the gun hunters are gone! I’m still patiently waiting for the big one to slip up, but its time to get serious about shooting a doe.

November 21, 2020 at 7:32 am #1990041Beautiful morning, and hey, no echo of gun shots! I do however have a rooster (chicken) about 100 yards away crowing his feeble head off! Dad must have had one wander off.

John TimmPosts: 364November 21, 2020 at 1:16 pm #1990086Update. Shot a nice doe at 9:15 @41 yards. Hit looked good, slightly back. Sounded good, full pass through. She ran about 75 yards. Stopped behind a tree for 1 minute, then walked over a ridge onto the neighbor’s. I waited till just after 11. Tracked up to the ridge and glassed everywhere I could see. Didn’t see her, so I backed out and went to talk with the neighbor. He said go find her. So Im heading back out in a bit. Hopefully she hasn’t gone much farther. There’s a really big nasty swamp past where she headed…..
