Never been in hockey, never played except for knee hockey in the basement as kids, so I have to ask did the long hair thing come about for some type of function? Did it start out as hey it soaks up more sweat under a helmet or keeps your dome warmer on the ice or what? It’s fascinating how this is a thing, curious to its roots. grin

Mainly it was just a common hairstyle in the 80s. There’s a theory about keeping your neck warm but I don’t believe it. Big time players like Jaromir Jagr made it mainstream.

The MN state hockey tournament is unique in that there has always been a televised payer introduction that gets broadcast across the state. Of course high school kids are gonna try to get noticed.

Awesome! Making hockey hair great again! I commented on the lack of hockey hair this year but I’m guessing it will be back in it’s full glory next year!

It’s awful. When I played hockey I grew mine out one season and it was miserable. It’s significantly hotter, it sucks trying to sleep with it, and it needs a lot more shampoo. It serves no purpose other than the way it looks.

When I played hockey back in the early to mid-70’s we didn’t grow our hair out for hockey because most guys had long hair already.

We were all coat-tailing of the previous 60’s hippie faction. That, and by then all the top rock musicians had the flowing locks.

    Shampoo? roll
