Not exactly a trail camera pic, but it’s always nice getting to watch a couple nice bucks! Sure wish I would have brought the spotting scope though!

July 12, 2018 at 11:34 pm #1785502All i’ve seen so far is does with fawns and a few turkeys. None of the bucks I had over the winter have shown back up. But I did get this pic of a crow that I thought was kinda cool.

July 16, 2018 at 7:21 am #1785928That’s a dandy Hillhiker!!
I got up to the farm over the weekend and checked the cams. Nothing real impressive except the sheer number of deer on the cams. a couple decent bucks and then the dreaded possible wolf

July 27, 2018 at 9:55 am #1787940Cannot upload video but this first buck we have been watching for about 4 years. Bummer is I lost all the pictures last year when my tablet pooped out.
The real tall one is a new one that showed up in the end of December last year and stuck around still.

July 31, 2018 at 7:45 am #1788493Starting to see an 8-pt that has a little width. Needs to get some length though as we’re already approaching Aug.
Been also seeing bear a lot more consistently this year. Our plum trees in the yard may be in jeopardy.

August 5, 2018 at 9:58 pm #1789683Hillhiker, those are some cool bucks. The deer flies on the one with double brows……. I just refreshed my batteries n cards last Sunday. Thought the deer flies n mosquitos would kill me for sure…
August 6, 2018 at 5:23 am #1789695The bugs must be bad down in the creek bottoms. The deer that seem to be more residents of the top of the hills have almost zero bugs. I was also trimming shooting lanes yesterday and the bugs weren’t bad.
This is the first year with that buck on camera. I would guess it’s a injury in early velvet. He’s definitely goofy looking though! Here’s one of the other bucks that’s normally in that group.

When I was peeling the hide off the skullcap around the antler bases I found an antler tip buried in the skull bone just below the base of the odd antler. After drying that antler tip fell out. I tried keeping the tip safe but over tip it disappeared though I still have the rack. I’ll get a picture of the rack/hole and post it later.
As mentioned, injuries to velvet can cause anomalies in the antlers however any injury on one side of the animal, I believe, can cause antler anomalies if the animal is stressed as a result of the injury.
August 6, 2018 at 7:59 am #1789716Great bucks!! That one is goofy, can you tell if he has any kind of injury? Does he limp? As Tom mentioned a previous injury can cause future racks to be messed up.
This is a rack I have hanging in my office of a buck I shot 3-4 years ago. My son had shot him the year before, but the arrow hit a limb and went into the back leg of the deer. When I skinned the deer he had a bad abscess in that back leg causing his one side to develop really screwy. I really like the history behind this deer.

As you look at the antlers upright the antler on the left is the deformed one. the other picture is of the hole where the antler tip was buried. I would have liked to had been at that sparring match.
This deer was shot two years after the antler tip got imbedded as I saw him the year before I shot him and his antler was messed up that year too. The deer was old according to the DNR tooth study….11 years old. He had a seriously white face.
I have another set of antlers similar to stickers except both sides are a mess. I’ll see if I can find those for a pic too.

August 6, 2018 at 2:28 pm #1789847I’ve watched the deer with the spotting scope a couple times this year out in the beans and he looks perfectly healthy. I was thinking he maybe hit that side early on causing it to do what it did. It’s hard to say though not knowing the deer from the year before.
August 7, 2018 at 7:43 pm #1790154I’ve read before that testicular damage will cause the opposite side antler to grow funny……. True story.
August 8, 2018 at 5:36 pm #1790417I’ve read the same. The article said an injury to a deer effects the opposite side antler due to the carotid arteries crossing behind the ears. The exception to that would be a injury at or ahead of the ears, or the point where the arteries cross. Pretty interesting stuff!
August 9, 2018 at 6:15 am #1790480I have always understood that if the injury is in the rear end of the deer(back half) it would affect the opposite side antler, in the front half it affects the same side antler. In this case the testicular injury would make sense.
Jeff SchomakerPosts: 396August 13, 2018 at 10:08 am #1791226A few decent bucks have shown up on camera. The big one I know very well. My dad hit it in the shoulder blade last November and we never found it. Love seeing that he made it and put on quite a few inches. The other two will get a pass from me this year. Hope my dad does the same.
