Found some nice ones on the Rainy last week
Frances K, were those photos from the Sturgeon Excursion this past weekend? Was wondering how that all went and didn’t see any reports or anything posted.

A group of us have been going the last several years which happened to coincide with the SE this year. The pics were from this last week.

She is a single mom and has this weekend to catch her first sturgeon. Is there anyone out there that can point us to where they are concentrated, at this point, in this crazy year? Are they up the river, or out in the GAP? Thanks for any help you can provide.

They were jumping everywhere last night.

Rod BentPosts: 360October 15, 2018 at 8:07 am #1803740Went fishing with Sharptailer and Kieran Saturday evening. Kieran is a big boy now that he’s 12. And he’s a fish magnet! Always outfishes us. Every time out is epic. So we were talking smack and trash as usual. I finally shut him down with a string of corny Halloween jokes. He could only shake his head. Michael just mumbled and picked crumbs from his beard.
Sturgeon were jumping and shad were thick. Gulls feeding around us. Nobody else fishing sturgeon though. It wasn’t long before I caught 2 tagged sturgeon back to back. The first one took the gob of crawlers like it was candy. The second brought my bait all the way to the boat before I realized it. Not a tap on the rod at all. Then it jumped at the boat and gave me a bath.
Then the fun started. A sturgeon jumped downstream behind us. It stayed at the surface for a moment looking like a shark with it’s pointy fins. Only then did Kieran’s rod bend. Not a twitch beforehand. Kieran began the battle and the fish came back upstream to the boat. It managed to pick up Michael’s downstream line on the way. Then it ran up and back and got the upstream anchor rope.
Kieran was jammed so I began hauling in the anchor. Holy cow was it heavy! Must be a big one. Got it to the surface and found the mother of all clusters. Besides the other lines we had a lost anchor rope and the underwater phone cable. By now Michael had pulled up the second anchor so the only thing keeping us from drifting was me holding the phone line. I hollered at him to put the anchor back because I was starting to lost my grip. Got the bait knife and started cutting. Unhook Michael from the cable and get hold of Kieran’s line. Started hauling in one tired fish.
It came up gladly and we netted it. Did CRP and let ‘er go. Whew! Everyone stripped off our parkas and cooled off. The boat looked like a hurricane hit it. Toasted the fish with Panther whiskey and got back to business.
Not done yet. Another sturgeon jumped off the stern. I said “Michael you got a fish “. “No I don’t “. “Yes you do. That one that just jumped is on”. Sure as shooting he started reeling and brought in the the third one in a row that gave no sign that it was biting.
So all in all it was another Epic. I have to rest up before the next time. Good fishing spot. Just look for the phone line!
