Made it back up north for the weekend. My son passed a basket 8 and some does. I saw a spike and some does. About 5 inches of snow in NW MN. My issue was I was sitting in a group of aspen trees with snow in the ground wearing Realtree camp. Stuck out bad and forgot my snow camo.

I was just looking thru a package that came from Waltons yesterday with my sausage making order when I see a large dark mass walk past the window. I looked up in time to see this deer turn and stop just under a bird feeder long enough to grab the camera and snap a couple shots. After smiling for the camera he walked out to the sidewalk and trotted past the neighbors house you see in the picture and then waltzed down into the park’s wooded area.
This is one of the year and a half old bucks we see on pretty often that like to cal Assisi Heights, a huge stone convent and large acreage now owned by Mayo Clinic, home and wanders between home and the parkland a lot. I’ve identified three basket-rackers like him this year. Its fun to see them come visit as long as they keep their whiskers out of my bird feeders.

DTWho ever remembers needing snow camo this early, that’s something that’s not registering yet, at least for me.

It’s becoming just another thing to add to the truckload of gear you need to hunt in MN these days. Got to be prepared for anything from 75 to -10.
Same thing with turkey season in the spring. Need to bring the snow camo because last year April was a winter month.

Aaron KalbererPosts: 373October 16, 2018 at 8:50 am #1804032I had success last night with my first archery deer. I spent the weekend bow hunting and thanks to the insight of @sticker I was able to get to see a few bucks Saturday and sunday. No shots offered.
I decided to make a quick sit after work yesterday. It seemed to be a heavily used deer trail going to a soybean field midway between bedding. The deer have been in the field at last light, so figured they’d be coming across a saddle between two ponds in the light.
I set up at 6:15 yesterday evening beside a big maple (I wanted to do this from the ground) and not even 5 minutes pass and two fawns come running through, not 10 steps from me at eye level. They are playing and romping around and I see 2 nice does coming along the edge of the pond. The fawns take off running to the field and the does hastily follow with one pausing perfectly broadside at 20 steps. I was high on my shot (not sure if she ducked or I just made a bad shot) but was quickly finished.
Time to take a little break and do some fishing!

October 18, 2018 at 5:24 pm #1804601Little warm tonight, but the perfect wind for this stand. Just had a big Tom walk by at 50 yards. Another 20 yards closer and I would have filled the fall turkey tag in my pocket.
October 18, 2018 at 5:43 pm #1804602The Tom looped around and got 4 of his buddies. I. Might fill that tag yet
October 18, 2018 at 6:12 pm #1804609They finally came out in the open at about 80 yards. 9 Toms all 2 years old and older. That was cool to watch!

Even with the wind the cold front pushing thru overnight should make tonight a good sit… Good luck!
October 22, 2018 at 5:19 pm #1805158To nice out to skip this afternoon! Had a button buck watch me set up my stand from 20 years away. I ended up sticking around for almost an hour.

October 24, 2018 at 5:09 pm #1805615Most likely my last sit at home before gun season. I’d really like to stick a big one tonight.

I’m watching a plot and the field road coming in. Wind is in my favor. Here’s hoping.

October 28, 2018 at 9:40 am #1806222Well this morning was a rollercoaster ride to say the least! I passed a small 8 at first light. About 5 mins later I had what would have been the biggest deer of my life get to 6 yards. It was slightly quartering to me so i tried to tuck the arrow tight to the shoulder. I must have caught shoulder, and my arrow split on impact sending the arrow head flying out of the deer. After about a half hour I got down to check for blood, and there was the deer 50 yards away! He was working a scrape with just a small spot of blood on his shoulder.
I watched him till he eventually walked off looking totally fine. I would have been thrilled to get him, but it was good to see him getting around good after that! I crawled back into stand and l this guy came into a grunt call. He was at twenty yards for a few mins. Let the vacation begin!

Aaron KalbererPosts: 373October 29, 2018 at 8:24 am #1806389Sat twice this weekend, first sit on Friday evening, had 6 does walk by at 10 yds or less, I let them walk hoping for a buck. I was hunting from the ground, no blind so I was happy with how close I was. Saturday I decided I would fill my remaining tag with a mature doe if one offered a stupid simple shot. I went out Saturday evening in the rain. The deer waited to last light to start moving. Heard 2 bucks sparring which was just a quick clash of antlers and then they were silent. Right at the last few minutes of shooting a nice sized doe and 2 yearlings walked by I drew back with the doe 5 yds broadside but she did not stop walking so let down and watched. The track job would have been dang near impossible in the rain anyway.
