Well that’s it for this year. Gov Dayton vetoed the omnibus bill containing the cast net/shad bill that would make this become law.

I doubt the legislature will go around his veto.

FYI- the DNR supported cast nets.

    Sad, very sad.

What’s sad is that these bills are a package deal and all or nothing. The Muskie stuff that was included in this bull was downright ridiculous. While I’m happy it didn’t pass there were some issues in the bill that I wish would have passed.

This is why nothing ever gets done in politics anymore. Everything is bundled in with other things that are completely unrelated. If one side doesn’t agree with one thing in the bill it’s killed along with everything else bundled in it. doah

@grizper and others that might not be aware…

The MN Catfish Workshop Group supported using a castnet for harvesting shad out of infested waters. Specifically the Mississippi and St Croix rivers. There was on line training involved along with the DNR physically attaching a tag to the net. We could harvest shad and used them as bait in the Pool we caught them in. Transportation including taking them home for freezing was not allowed. There were some record keeping requirements as well.

The above had a 3 year sunset clause to allow the DNR to tweek or dump the law completely if there was an unacceptable risk in transporting ais.

At the end of the three years (last year) the DNR tweeked the law slightly allowing us to use larger nets and less reporting along with taking out the sunset clause. They added the Minnesota River as well.

Dayton vetoed it. As of right now,it will be iligal to harvest shad with a cast net this year.

At best, this had made many cat/sturgeon anglers very unhappy and at the worst, will make the game and fish violators.

It’s probably more of a two-edged sword. As a stand alone a lot of things would likely never get time in committee, let alone make it to the floor for a vote. The best bet to pass them would be to get them attached to an Omnibus.

@bk That was supposed to be an angry emoji. For some reason when I posted it it came up as question marks. I had been one of the lucky recipients to have been using a cast net for the last few years. Just sad that everyone I talk to was completely in support of it but like others have said you bundle these things together and there is always something wrong.

I DID vote for you. Then the Men In Black showed up at my house and told me to knock it off.
