Well I suppose it’s about time to start the 2017 thread. Anyone going up for opener this weekend? I really want to but I think i’m going to fish the Bemidji Cass Muskies Inc. Chapter Challenge instead. Good luck to those headed up! Looks like it could be a little chilly….

I’m headed up for a nice stint starting this weekend. Sounds like the fish are biting! I should have a good report when I return!
June 28, 2017 at 9:36 pm #1701560Good Luck Pat! Headed up in a 9 days for a week long of sore shoulders! Counting the hours and excited for your report. Good luck
bradl110Posts: 276June 28, 2017 at 11:22 pm #1701569Pat, I’m curious how your trip goes. I will be heading up to fish the angle starting July 6th for a week. From what I’ve read water temps are still in the low to mid 60’s. Hoping by the time we get there that the fish have transitioned to main lake rock reefs. Wish you the best of luck. Looking forward to your report.

Pat,
Do you fish Sab or the angle?

I’ve heard the same on the water temperatures which seems a little cold yet, but it’s getting to be the right time of year for them to start moving to the summer spots. It might be early for some main lake reefs and such, but rock points, saddles and reefs close to spawning bays should have some fish showing up on them I would think. Time will tell…..

I typically fish from Sab all the way to the angle this time of year, but on this trip I will be staying at Crawfords Camp in Sioux Narrows, so i’ll be fishing Yellow girl to Big Narrows and North. I’m sure ill spend a little bit of time in Whitefish Bay as well.

To your knowledge do any chips chart out BN, not just the channels.
June 29, 2017 at 11:00 am #1701656What graphs do you use? My Garmins have it mapped pretty darn well.

helix 12
June 29, 2017 at 12:07 pm #1701671You could go to the navionics web app and see if that’s sufficient? If so then buy the chip.
tswobodaPosts: 8723July 6, 2017 at 7:50 am #1702612The preloaded contour XD basemap in your Helix 12 should show rough contours and rock hazards. My helix 9 does anyway. The map looks like the Canadian Hydrographic paper maps. (Navionics is the same but with 1′ contours interpolated in)
Switch your chart settings from auto to contour xd or just pop your map cards out and see what you have there.
July 6, 2017 at 8:11 am #1702616The Lakemaster Woods-Rainy chip (versions 3 or 4) has most of Big Narrows in 1′ contours. If that covers enough of where you’re fishing, it includes more functionality for your Humminbird Helix such as depth highlighting and follow the contour if you’re networked to an iPilot Link.
“The detail covers all U.S and Canadian water from Big Narrows through Big Traverse & Sabaskong Bays North to Sioux Narrows and West beyond Deadbroke channel (810,000 total surveyed acres).
Also includes: Blueberry Inlet, Deadbroke Channel, Long Bay, Sunset Channel, Black Sturgeon Bay & Yellow Girl Bay.”Here’s a link showing the covered areas visually:

It looks like temps are still in the upper 60s?It looks like we might get up there in September for the Nestor Falls Musky Cup. Looks fun! If anyone was interested in going and wants to split a cabin, get a hold of me.
http://www.muskycup.2cat.com/July 10, 2017 at 11:48 am #1703365I just returned last night from my trip. It started out slow for me and then ended with a bang! We started out fishing more main lake rock reefs and points. It didn’t take long to realize those spots just weren’t holding any quantity of fish. Some spots would hold a fish or two, but definitely few and far between.
We started fishing more weeds and rocks in VERY close proximity to spawning bays. Those spots definitely held a few more fish.
We put the puzzle together once we started finding deeper weeds, and fishing right up until and after dark. Bucktails caught all the fish except 1. A Pacemaker caught the other one.
The fish would show themselves during the Major, but not bite. We would return to those fish at moonrise/sunset and they would bite. Simple as that. The last night we were there we fished until about 1:00AM and went 3 for 5 on fish after dark with lots of boatside strikes in the moonlight!
I’ll add some photos when I get to them!
July 10, 2017 at 1:59 pm #1703391We fished this spot for 3 hours mid day and saw 6 fish, but no big ones. Went back to it at about 8:00PM and this 4 footer finally showed up and ate!

I’ve been kicking around doing this tournament for a few years. It sounds like a good time!
July 12, 2017 at 3:43 pm #1703860good job solving the puzzle!
That’s the coolest part is how you put it together, really nice job! Thanks for sharing and those pics are awesome
tswobodaPosts: 8723July 31, 2017 at 11:01 am #1707466I was up on LOTW with a buddy this weekend for a quick day and a half trip. The water and weather was HOT but the bite was bi-polar… We’d move a bunch of fish in an hour or 2 and then have 3 hours of nothing. Location and bait didn’t seem to be overly important, but when the fish turned on you better have a bait in the water. We managed to capitalize on a couple windows to put 6 fish in the net for the weekend. Lost a couple nippers as well and had a pile of fish that would chase like crazy at the boat but we couldn’t get to commit.
