It’s getting to be that time of year. Big game will start opening up out west with the Midwest not far behind. Use this thread to post LIVE updates from the stand of your big game hunts.

First couple stand locations figured out. I had to sit down and enjoy the view for a little bit. Needless to say I’m getting pretty excited!

That is a deer stand. I’m trying to get everything ready before I leave for Montana on the 6th.

I wasn’t in a treestand for the last week but close. I spent the last 7 days in MT hunting Muleys! After seeing a Lot deer, and a few failed stalks I ended up shooting a doe and my first muley. It was a great shot at 41 yards and she only made it 30 yards. It’s always nice when they don’t make it over the ridge!

Good luck to all the hunters this weekend for archery opener! I will be in the stand Saturday morning. Let the season begin!

First nights glassing session after a long day of driving! We spent a lot of nights glassing the burns.

Good to hear. We had a mild winter but I’ve only seen 2 does with single fawns in the neighborhood so far this summer. Would have expected a better turnout. Maybe it was a good spring for predators or maybe I’m just not seeing fawns that are actually out there.

Super crummy pic because it’s zoomed all the way but if you use your “Blade Runner” photo enhancement software you might be able to tell it’s a small 8-pt.

Sounds like the wolves to my south just chimed in.

From about 5:00 am until just after 7 am we had some good old electrical energy in the air with lots of thunder and some real solid downpours. Wind at times too. Hillhiker, you should stay dry according to the tracking of the system. The woods are super dry here in the SE and the rain is welcome as far as I am concerned. What went thru here this morning won’t bother many in the stand I don’t think. Good luck to all of you and use that harness!

It was a real damp morning with just enough breeze to create some rustling. Couldn’t hear anything. With the exception of chattering even the red squirrels were silent.

A variety of activity this morning. Geese, Sandhills, Loons and Wolves all sounded their presence. 4 deer walked by the stand.

Made it out on Saturday morning for a little while. The heat was manageable, no rain in my area. At about 6:45, a small buck made it’s way under my stand. Was cool to watch. Around 8:30, I heard some rustling and then 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 doe came prancing around a fallen tree about 40 yards away. 4 of the 6 were real small but 2 of them were of very good size. I told myself I wouldn’t shoot with all of them there as to not spook the other 5. Wouldn’t you know it, 5 of the doe all wandered away and the big momma stuck around (pun intended). Meat in the freezer is a good way to start the season! Didn’t take any pictures as the heat made me rush. Not to mention I had a wedding I needed to attend that night…

I did manage to take a picture of one of the small doe’s while they were eating. About 20 yards away.

Nice cold front moved in today. Sitting in stand with cool Temps is awesome. Corn on one side, brassica on the other and CRP off in the back. I got a good feeling about tonight even though trail cams don’t have very good intel.

I was able to get out for a city hunt on Saturday night, didn’t see anything. But between the down pour and the insane amount of mosquitoes I didn’t make it till dark. I left and went to a public piece where is was on the edge of the storm, ended up seeing 2 does on the edge of a cattail slough. Tried a stalk and closed from 300 yards to a little over 100 yards just slipping along with them in the tall swamp grass, then I got busted as I stepped on a log that I couldn’t see or feel. The mosquitoes were really bad there as well, even with bug spray on it didn’t keep them away.

Here’s my view from the city hunt

1st opportunity to hunt since opening weekend. Left work 1/2 hr later than I wanted to. Just in time for the rain. Traffic went pear shaped so I lost another 1/2 hr. Had to do a close makeshift stand for the last hour of daylight. Will get some better opportunities tomorrow.

Boy is it wet up here. Best have rubber boots.

Nice evening but a bit warm in the mid 60s. Had a spike at 20 yds but it received a pardon. Saw this long main beam 6-pt. Hadn’t seen it on any of the trail cams. A big bopper (at least for these parts) showed up but was a late arriver at 7:05 pm. If it had presented a shot it likely would not have received a pardon.

Cold front coming through. I’m sitting over the same bean field I saw about a dozen deer in last night.

I am balls deep in brassica tonigt, but I don’t think it’s going to matter. As always, my deer at home won’t touch brassica. No browse pressure what so ever

I’m out for the first sit on a farm I just got permission to hunt. I scouted Tuesday, and found 3 scrapes on a wooded fenceline along a long stretch of clover leading out to beans. Behind me is a inside corner of a corn field. In two days the the number of scrapes doubled! Always nice to get a little reminder the rut is on its way!

Half day of work today. I’m always less confident when the wind is blowing. Hedged movement may be later so I set up on a funnel between a pasture fence and black spruce/muskeg swamp. Was only visited by a couple grouse.
